Two MACs - one Database?

Hey dear users, I hope anybody can help me...
I have following problem: As a user of a MAC at home and a MACBOOK on-the-go, I wish I could use ONE common database. Normally I prepare my tours at home on the big one, but obviously sometimes when you are already on the trip you wanna correct, ad, or just modify your "BaseCamp-Project".... them it would be quite useful to have all the data on your planning-MAC also on your MacBook....

Anybody out there who had the same problem? ANY SOLUTIONS?

Greetz and thanks a lot ...

I don't do this for BaseCamp, but for several files that I want to have shared across machines, I put them in my Dropbox http://dropbox.com/ and they get automatically synced. If you can figure out the files or folders that BaseCamp uses (look in ~/Library/Application Support/Garmin), just put them in your Dropbox and make aliases to the Dropbox files back to where the originals were. I do this successfully for Training Center, Ascent, and RubiTrack, in addition to various work related files.

I believe Garmin's intent with the new "Cloud Data" in BaseCamp is exactly to allow cross device sharing, so you could just put everything in Cloud Data. I prefer Dropbox because it's so automatic, but it is more difficult.
  • The simplest way is to use BC's Backup feature. Save the file on your desktop Mac and then transfer it to your MacBook. Use Restore to bring it into BC.

At that point it doesn't matter whether you transfer it by wire, USB drive, network, email or Dropbox.

Here is a method for syncing Basecamp between 2 (or more!) Macs using Dropbox.. I've been using this setup for a couple of years and never had any problems.

    Regards
    Simon

    --------------
HOWTO: Sync BaseCamp data between Macs
If you are comfortable with using Terminal to execute a few commands, you can set up BaseCamp to share its data between multiple computers. Note that this is a Mac-only solution. Download and install the free Dropbox application from www.dropbox.com. If BaseCamp is currently running, quit it. In Finder, go to <your Home directory>/Library/Application Support/Garmin. Move the BaseCamp folder from that directory to your Dropbox directory. Launch Terminal. Enter the following two commands:

    cd <your Home directory>/Library/Application\ Support/Garmin
    ln -s <your Dropbox directory>/BaseCamp

Now go to another computer that you want to sync BaseCamp data to. Install Dropbox. Again, quit BaseCamp if it's running. In Finder, go to <your Home directory>/Library/Application Support/Garmin. Delete the BaseCamp folder. Note that any BaseCamp data that was on this computer that was not on the other computer will be lost here. So, you may want to manually sync that data before you do all this. Next, launch Terminal and repeat the two commands shown above. That's it. Your BaseCamp data will now be automatically synchronized between the two computers. If you have a third (or fourth, etc.) computer that you want to sync to just repeat the second part of these instructions on that computer.

Please note that this only syncs the database related info.. It does NOT sync the maps - which need to be installed locally on each Mac.

    BIG WARNING!!!!

Make sure that you run BaseCamp on only one computer at a time. If you run BaseCamp simultaneously on multiple computers that are syncing data this way, it is very likely that your data will be corrupted or completely lost. The easy way to protect against this is to quit BaseCamp on each synced computer when you are done using it on that computer.

  • I have be sync BaseCamp with 3 macs using the method described above for several years. I have never had a problem, it just works. You always have you database even if not connected to the web but soon as you get connected every thing syncs. I try to head the big warning but failed a few times with no ill side effects.
