Lack of road details in Basecamp Mac versus PC version.

I'm having trouble viewing smaller backroads and dirt tracks on the Mac BC versus the PC version.
On the PC version I can easily zoom out to 7km range and still see the smaller dirt roads I seek.
On the Mac version these details vanish if I zoom above 1,5 km view range.

Map is latest City Navigator Europe 2013.30 NT for Zumo 550 and Zumo 660 motorcycle GPS units.

How can I correct this Mac Basecamp zoom issue? I use a Macbook Air 11" for motorcycle touring
and would love to see BC operate as well there for smaller backroads/dirt roads planning.
It's not any good for my planning purposes when smaller roads vanish beyond 1,5km zoom range.

Have I missed some clever menu adjustment here? Detail levels are set to max for both 3d an 2d maps.
I use the 2d maps for route planning along these smaller dirt roads ( offroad motorcycling on dirt roads ).
  • One of the many differences between the two apps, and one of the only windows version features I'd like to see in the Mac version. Frustrating. The desktop developers have been made aware of this on more than one occasion.

This sounds like an easy fix. Whatever OS reasons behind - it doesn't make sense that the detail levels are poorer on Mac OS at same zoom range.
It actually makes Mac Basecamp a poorer planning tool for dual sport riding - with less oversight and backroad capabilities.
  • It also makes it a less desirable planning tool for my favorite type of on-road riding, which is on rural roads that sometimes either turn to dirt, which I'd prefer to avoid, or leave you at an intersection where all the choices are dirt unless you re-trace your steps.

Adding to the problem of zoom detail is that dirt roads are not very clearly designated on the maps to begin with, no matter how far in you zoom.

Yes. For hiking and dirt-road planning I use openstreetmap maps, such as Nops_Wanderkarte or openmtbmap.
While they might not contain all the small roads the CN provides, their road/path classification is way better.
And you can zoom out to around 5 or 7km without loosing the small roads.

  • I definitely agree with the original question/request. I work on both environmentS, with a "small" Mac on the road. I miss that feature much.

I'm about to ditch the Mac Air in favor of a PC equivalent. I'll miss the Mac build quality, but heck.

The Mac version of Basecamp simply doesn't do the dualsport planning job properly - and Garmin will lose a lot of potensial customers in the Mac community with this crappy interface. There's no logic or rationale advocating that the Mac version should display less detailed backroad information than the PC version at same zoom levels.

Hey, Garmin folks; are you working on this subject or is there a target group business policy at large here? Just curious.
  • I'll be teaching a BaseCamp Trip Planning Workflow session at the BMW-MOA International Rally this July and this will be one of the many unnecessary differences between the MAC and WinOS BaseCamp applications that I will be highlighting. Garmin certainly knows by now that these inconsistencies are not helping with the proliferation of BaseCamp. I also believe (based upon personal feedback) that it has a negative impact on the sale of Garmin products by driving folks to Smartphones and generic trip planning applications like Google Maps, etc.

    Cheers,
  • I just can't get motivated to setup up windows BaseCamp just compare maps. When I compare streets and side roads in known areas, I don't remember finding any missing roads. Certainly hiking trails, jeep roads and the like are missing from City Navigator but I prefer the 24K Topo Maps for these areas and BaseCamp switches maps extremely well. I agree nothing should be better on Windows than a Mac, if it is, its the developer fault. Can someone give me an example of detail difference being different on Win vs Mac BC? Is the difference just in off road type areas or do you find more detail in city and urban areas?

    Thanks
  • I believe that the "detail" differences is not between map installs but rather between zoom levels: i.e, Win-BC shows more detail than MAC-BC at a given zoom level.

    Cheers,
  • Sounds like the only solution would be a user preference for detail per zoom level. In most cases I tend to like less clutter.

    Thanks
