BaseCamp - missing map

I subscribed to Lifetime map updates yesterday and downloaded GarminExpress onto my MacBookPro. It ran an update and found a new map 2013.40 (I was on 2013.10). It ran an update and moved the map onto my Zumo 660. All seemed fine. When I opened BaceCamp I noticed that it was updating/indexing the maps from my Zumo but that the map on my machine was still 2013.10. If I disconnect my Zumo and run BaseCamp I'm on 2013.10 (although since trying to fix it I appear to have removed that and I'm now on 'global map').

In short I need to have my Zumo connected to my computer to have BaseCamp work with the latest map. surely that's not right.

I checked the forum which seems to suggest run MapUpdate. I tried that but it keep crashing at the last stage (as soon as I press advanced).

Any solution?

Thank you
Vincent
  • If the map isn't on you mac, then yes you will need to have your Zumo connected to view it. Why MapUpdater is crashing I can't say ... but if it's not working you could try one of the following:

    1. Copy your Zumo files onto a USB stick or sd card. Basecamp will then read the files off that so you won't have to connect your Zumo every time.
    2. I haven't tried this but it was mentioned elsewhere as a solution. Rename the gmapprom.img file on your Zumo to gmapprom.xyz and run Express. Express won't 'see' the map, and without enough room to load a map will then give the option to install the map to your Mac. Remember to change the map file on your Zumo back to gmapprom.img afterwards!

Thanks. I have also downloaded the 'lifetime updater' which appears to have a facility to select computer; device; both. Perhaps that can work as well.

    Any experience with that?

  • That was buggy also, and replaced by Express, but it won't hurt to try :)

OK thanks. It all seems a bit buggy. Are they working on a fix for GarminExpress. In principle the idea is good just not working properly yet
  • They keep releasing new versions, now on 2.1.11 and it keeps improving but as posted elsewhere it still seems to be a 'work in progress' :)
  • I have a BMW Navigator IV [Zumo 660] and two 2730's and I am having the same frustrating problem of not being able to install detail maps in Basecamp on my computer. There has go to be an easier way to get the detail maps installed. I am fearful of trying the method you suggest because every time in the past when I have tried to manipulate computer files, the problem I'm try to fix only seems to get worse. Usually much worse!

What makes this doubly frustrating is that somehow I had previously been able to unlock the detail maps in Basecamp on my computer. But now, after a couple of Basecamp updates, those detail maps no longer appear on Basecamp's Maps list unless the GPS is connected to the computer. Before whatever happened to cause the loss of those detail maps on my computer, I could do all my route planning using detail maps without having to have the GPS connected. Now I have to connect the GPS!

SO, so frustrating dealing with Basecamp and increasingly frustrating dealing with Garmin GPS software.

Bottom line? I just don't have the confidence to start changing file names.

There has got to be an easier way.
  • There is, no need to 'manipulate' any maps. Both Garmin Express and GarminMapUpdater will send maps to your mac for use by Basecamp.
  • Thanks SUSSAMB,

Thanks for the reply, but I've been trying both Garmin Express and Garmin Map Updater to download the maps to my computer, but the maps do not seem to download to Basecamp, and that is why this is SO SO frustrating! I'm probably missing something, but for the life of me I can't figure it out. I've looked at the Basecamp Tutorials, I've looked for download instructions, I've tried the Unlock Maps Online button in Basecamp, I've tried downloading to Basecamp with a GPS connected to the computer, and I've done all of the previous so many times I can no longer keep count.

Obviously, I'm missing something, because I have previously had the Detail Maps downloaded to my computer and they were useable by Basecamp. How I lost those detail maps I have no idea. All I know right now is the Detail Maps are missing from my computer and the only way I can access them is to connect my BMW Navigator IV [Zumo 660] GPS to the computer when I'm using Basecamp.

Ok, I know it's "madness" but I'm going to try Garmin Express and GarminMapUpdater again and see if I get a different result. Am I insane?

Again, thanks for the reply. I really appreciate the response.

FYI Note: I currently use the BMW Navigator IV, two 2730's and a Zumo 550 and I used to use Basecamp but I can't anymore because I cannot access my Detail Maps unless a GPS is connected to the computer. I also used to use Mapsource. Can we bring back Mapsource?

Thanks for the reply, but I've been trying both Garmin Express and Garmin Map Updater to download the maps to my computer, but the maps do not seem to download to Basecamp...

Well the maps don't load to a PC/Mac unless you specifically find and enable the option to do that.

The PC version of Garmin Express and GarminMapUpdater have that option. I can't say if the Mac version does.
  • And Mapsource is still available for use should you want. Just note it uses the same map as Basecamp so you still need to download it.
