Map installation

I have owned a GPS Map 176, 276 and 478 and have, until recently, used Mapsource as my mapping program of choice. I recently changed to Basecamp and also purchased a Zumo 665 which had its own maps preinstalled. I then went to purchase a copy Navigator for my computer as I had done 3 or 4 times previously except to find that the map I purchased was installed on my Zumo instead of my Mac laptop and only appears on the computer copy of Basecamp when the Zumo is attached. This is clearly a royal pain as I cannot do routing on my laptop without the Zumo.

I paid for a map for my computer I don't understand why it got installed on the Zumo.

Should I purchase mapping for my GPS on a disc, pre-programmed datacard, or as downloadable content?

    specifically

Downloadable Content: Maps purchased in this format can be downloaded directly from the Garmin website. This is the quickest method of getting mapping for your next trip. Downloaded maps can be sent to either your GPS unit or a blank datacard since most devices will not hold all of the data on the device. All maps in this format are unlocked to a specific device and they can only be used on the device that they were unlocked to. Similar to the pre-programmed datacards, this mapping is not immediately available on your computer for use in planning routes.

That said you can copy the contents of your Zumo to a removable drive (e.g. SD card or USB thumbdrive) and use that instead of your device. That trick only works for BaseCamp not MapSource.

A solution, thank you very much. That makes things a bit less klutzier.

(I just don't understand however, why I was able to download maps directly to my computer for the past couple of years and can no longer do that)

Well I'm not sure what you're talking about. If you have Lifetime map updates for one or more devices you can (with GarminMapUpdater but NOT Garmin Express) install maps to your PC. That's what I do (and did a few days ago). That said the default is to install to the device only.

It would help if you state exactly what you purchased.
