Why Does Basecamp Let Me Add So Many Via Points...

Why does Basecamp let me add so many Via Points/Waypoints etc if gps units like the Montana/Oregon/Dakota/62/78 will not allow more than 50 when using "On Road/Follow Road" navigation?

Many people want to know why the gps units have this restriction when others like some Zumo units allow far more.

Because the limits are different for each model and BC has no way of determining that limit automatically.

As for the limit it appears to be arbitrary (i.e. 50 for many models). My bet is that number was set many years ago (when units had less memory) but has remained.

Even if the unit in question is actually plugged in, and connected via Basecamp at the time? Surely they could build that in, if BC is the recommended way to create routes?

Correct. To my knowledge that information has never been available via the Garmin serial/USB protocol or the GarminDevice.xml file.

Surely they could build that in...

In theory yes. Whether that will happen is another matter...

Not trying to start a challenge here but do you actually know any of this or are you speculating? Do you work for Garmin or do you just hang around the forums?

I do not work for Garmin and never have. However I have been using their products for over 12 years. I'm also a (semi)retired electrical engineer with a great deal of experience with protocols, computers and software. Then again maybe all that means nothing to you.

I'm a retired programmer and have used Garmin products as long as you have, so I could speculate too, but I'd like to hear from Garmin.

Ok but it's very unlikely you'll get an answer here. I don't think there's many, if any, Garmin device developers hanging out in these forums.

I do work for Garmin, and STUARTMW is correct. The device does not advertise it's limits in terms of number of via points, # of waypoints, # of routes, waypoint name length limit, etc. This is a short coming that has been identified, but not rectified. Sorry for the inconvenience.

Thanks for the answer. It's a shame to have it flawed that way. Is anyone working on that?
