Changing display of UTC time to local time

Hi Garmin

I am using Basecamp Mac version and I would like to change the time displayed on the track info from UTC to local time. My laptop has local time displayed but my desktop has UTC. I have not been able to find how to change this.

You say your Time Column display is 1/22/13 4:26:27 PM (UTC)

That implies that someone has customized your time display in SYSTEM:Preferences:Language & Text:Region:Time:Customize by adding the Timezone Display Tag to the Medium time display option. I think that BaseCamp uses the "medium time display option" to format the time in the Time Column.

Please attach one of your tracks to a post here. I'd like to download it and look at it on my system to see if it does the same thing as it does on yours.

    Here is a track

    Terminal gives the proper response.
    [Jim-Daniels-Computer:~] jimdaniel% date
    Sat Jan 26 14:10:56 MST 2013
    [Jim-Daniels-Computer:~] jimdaniel% date -u
    Sat Jan 26 21:11:05 UTC 2013

Adding the MST does not Help Result is 1/24/13 7:02:27 PMMST (UTC). The MST is meaningless since the time is offset by 7 hours from MST this is UTC.

I still believe this a problem of Basecamp not the system since another program of mine "Ascent" I use for bicycling displays local time correctly.

By the way Jack thanks for all your attempts at this.

Your track seems to work as designed on my system. Looking at the track in TextWrangler the first TrackPoint time is in Zulu (a/k/a UTC). Looking at the same point in BaseCamp 4.1.0 on my machine it shows up as it should, e.g., corrected to EST.

Now I agree that the problem is in BaseCamp. When you added the MST tag to your MediumTimeDisplay in System Preferences it showed up in your BaseCamp track log display. That tells me the system is NOT changing the time. Also the "(UTC)" notation stayed in the BaseCamp track display. That is coming from BaseCamp not the SYSTEM; the SYSTEM would not put it in parens.

SO, what to do? Here are a few wild *ss guesses:

    1. After backing up from BaseCamp try using the "Reset Factory Defaults" button on the Preferences General page.
    2. Try running Disk Utility to repair your disk preferences.
    3. You might also try clearing the BaseCamp cache (sorry I don't remember where it is right now)
    4. Uninstall BaseCamp and reinstall ver 4.1.0 with a fresh download.
    5. Hope one of the Garmin Mac BaseCamp team members notices all this.... :)

    Good luck!

The problem has been solved with the help of product support.

If the UTC time is off and your time is correct on the Mac, the time zone is probably set incorrectly. If you get the correct UTC time, I would recommend uninstalling and reinstalling BaseCamp. To uninstall Basecamp, please follow the instructions in the article below:
How do I uninstall Garmin BaseCamp?

    Answer:

Garmin BaseCamp can be uninstalled using the same steps you would use to remove most programs from a Windows PC or Mac.

    To uninstall from Windows:

    Click Start
    Click Control Panel
Click Add & Remove Programs (Windows Vista/7: Programs and Features)
    Click on Garmin BaseCamp
    Click on Remove or Uninstall

To remove BaseCamp from the Mac:

    Open Macintosh HD
    Click the Applications folder
Click and drag Garmin BaseCamp.app to the Trash
Click the Go menu at the top of the Mac
    Click Home
    Click the Library folder1
    Click the Preferences folder
Click and drag "com.garmin.BaseCamp.plist" to the Trash
Navigate back to the Library folder
    Click the Application Support folder
    Click the Garmin folder
Click and drag the BaseCamp folder to the Trash
    Empty the Trash

Garmin BaseCamp should now be removed from the computer.

1Note: The Library folder is hidden in Mac OS 10.7 and newer. To access the Library folder:

Click the Go menu at the top of the Mac
    Click Go to Folder
    Enter Library
    Click Go

Once BaseCamp is uninstalled, you can download it again from here:
