Deleting tracks from 60CSx ?

Friends, I am planning an 18 mile trip through the Linville Gorge, in Western North Carolina. As part of the trip, I downloaded the master .gpx file from www.linvillegorge.net, which is the forum for "gorge rats." The master file has an enormous amount of data http://www.linvillegorge.net/smf/index.php?topic=353.0

I have attempted to piece together the tracks that will make up my trip. (Pinchin trail, to Linville Gorge Trail, to a few other trails and come out at the falls). When I tried to download, the transfer was truncated. So now, with days into the project and a staggering level of frustration, I am trying to clear everything from my GPS and attempt a few other approaches. However, as ridiculous as this sounds, I am failing at even this simple step. When I go to "Edit", the drop down menu shows what seems to be the command for deleting the tracks, but it is not one of the available commands:

Does anyone know what I am doing wrong? Please type slowly; I am not feeling too bright at the moment.

Thanks,

Aaron Christensen
  • Have you actually selected any tracks? Until you select them the 'Delete' option will remain 'greyed out'.

Thank you for the suggestion. Yes, I did select them (Just double checked myself). However, even with the tracks selected, the delete option stays grey. It stays gray regardless of whether I selected tracks manually or use the "select all" feature of the drop down.

My software on the GPS is updated as of a few hours ago, as well.

  • Sorry, just seen you have a 60csx. Not sure whether that will work with Basecamp? You may need Mapsource to do what you want?

Thanks, adding insult to injury, I managed to delete tracks just yesterday during my session of trying to figure this out. (As I recall, that was an option after uploading all tracks that I had previously saved on my unit)

I can go into tracks on my unit, highlight, and delete there, but it is driving my nuts trying to figure out why I can't get it done in basecamp.

Can't help with the deletion as I'm a win user. But remember that saved tracks on the 60csx are limited to 500 points each, up to 20 such saved files. You could replace your active track file and then have up to 10000 points but then if you keep the tracking on, that track will be either overwritten or truncated (user option). The 62s has much better track memory available and easier to manipulate too.

The 60csx works a little differently than other units.
You do not download directly into the 60.
Make a folder on your computer and load the master.gpx file and mastermap files there.
You need an SD card in the 60.
Connect the 60 to your computer and use explore to find the Garmin drive and the SD card. Page 68 Owners Manual.
Copy and paste the master.gpx file into the SD card. Page 69 Owners Manual.
To view a track on the map on the 60 see page 29.
To delete tracks see page 29.
  • As the GPS 60CSx does not support data from the computer, you must delete any tracks that are already on the device from the device's menu. To get your tracks loaded into the 60 I would suggest a slight modification to DateZZ's suggestion. I would pick and transfer tracks onto an SD card using BaseCamp. This has several advantages 1) You can pick and choose which tracks and parts of tracks you want to send 2) BaseCamp will automatically filter the track to the 500 point limit that SARLABS mentioned. To enable the filtering, go to Preferences->Transfer and check "Simplify tracks by removing intermediate points":

Note that to see the SD card from within BaseCamp you will need to put the card into a card reader, or to put the 60 into "Mass Storage Mode" which will expose the card.
  • The GPSMAP 60CSx cannot read tracks (or routes, waypoints) from the SD card; they have to be sent to the device itself...
