Managing waypoints in the Route Properties window

For Mac Basecamp, to rename a Waypoint shown in the Route Properties, you must:

1) Double-click (or Cmd-I) on the waypoint in the Route Properties to see the "Trip Planner" floating palette.
2) Click on the "i" icon in the Trip Planner (or Cmd-I) to get to the Waypoint Properties
3) Double-click on the name text field in the Waypoint Properties
4) Type a new name and press ENTER or Tab.

When you want to rename all the waypoints in a Route (e.g. to give them sequence numbers, or because you duplicated the Route and want to change the "1" at the end of each name), this quickly really frustrating. Does anyone know a quicker shortcut? Ideally I'd like to be able to edit-in-place the Waypoint name within waypoints list of the Route Properties window, the same way I can in the "My Collection" tree.

On that topic, while looking at the Route Properties, there appears to be no way to export the Waypoints that are local to the route so they appear in a List - does anyone have a solution for this (other than opening each Waypoint's properties, and using the References tab?)
  • I added a case to allow rename directly from the via point edit page. Thanks for the feedback.

    ?

Because they are not waypoints, but shaping points? Also known as routing points?

Using routing points in a route is much preferred, because it keeps things clearer, especially in your device. Deleting a route, also deletes the routing points. If a route consists of only waypoints, then waypoints always stay behind and pollute your GPS device.

Making a waypoint of an routing point is really creating a waypoint, and then delete the routing point and include the waypoint in the route.
  • With regards to routing and waypoint, I find the following issue. Since my problem is associated with these two items, I thought it would be apt to
report it here in this thread, rather than a new thread.

    - I know for a fact that we cannot transfer routes from basecamp to the device for some of the Garmin devices
    - What I seek is : Can we at least transfer a sequence of waypoints to the device and tag it to a route?
    - We can then ask the device to recalculate the route based on these transferred sequence of waypoints.
    - The problem, if we have planned a route based on a sequence of waypoints, on our PC, then replicating the sequence on the device is a painful job.
    - At least base camp should allow transfer of the sequence of waypoints, which can then be used to re-calculate the route.

Is it possible today ? I use an old Garmin Nuvi 205W
  • The problem you have is that your 205 doesn't support routes. You can create a route by inserting vias so all BC can do is send the vias, you will then need to construct the route. Later Garmin nuvis that support routes or trips will do what you seek.

I agree to that and was also aware of 205 not supporting routes. What I wanted to know is if there if there is a simpler way to add multiple way points to a route in the device.
Now I feel that; what I ask itself may be a partial definition of route, which is supported in the later Garmins.

I thought route means an ordered set of way points which are also contain routing detail which has already been performed in a map installed in a PC. (Basecamp/Roadtrip/Mapsource)
Hence I was thinking if only there was a way to transfer the ordered waypoint set alone (without the routing detail) from Basecamp to device.

Looks like that may not be possible.
  • A route is not a ordered set of waypoints, but an ordered set of via points. Waypoints do not have a connection with a route. In a device that is; when you use waypoints to create a route in BaseCamp they will be treated as part of the route. This has to do with the way BaseCamp stores waypoints and via points internally. When transferring a route to a device the connection between waypoints and routes will be lost.
Waypoints are transferred alphabetically to the device.
