Nuvi 1490 LTM, BaseCamp & Recalculate route.

After a firmware update, my nuvi 1490 LTM has an option to recalculate an imported route from BaseCamp. With limited experimentation, it appears I get the BaseCamp route if I don't let the nuvi recalculate. Most of the time I get the same route if I allow the Nuvi to recalculate assuming I use the same map and preferences on the Nuvi and BaseCamp. This see almost too good to be true being I am not using a Montana or even a Zoom. Can anyone verify or explain the limitation of the no recalculate route option.

The 'recalculate' option for routes crept in without any mention of it in the changelogs for the software update. I can't recall exactly when but previous to the latest version which is 6.10.

It's available for all routes, not just those imported via Bascecamp.

It's another reason (the others being proper route planning and software stability) why I'm hanging on to my 1490 for as long as possible :)

+1 I guess it's sort of bad to admit that I haven't heard anything about this, but I think it's great.

Now I am afraid to update the Nuvi, it might go away. The firmware guys don't tell the users or the BaseCamp developers.

Some versions ago I started saving the GUPDATE.GCD file (in \.System) and changing the extension to the version number (e.g. .610) in case I needed to go back to a previous firmware version.

I just have found another reason to stay with old nuvis. New models, in my case 34xx, have simplified routing, that is based on "FastRouting" feature. "FastRouting" data is a part of City Navigator. If you don't have City Navigator for a given area, then nuvi can have problems with calculating a route. But if you have CN, then your routes will be similar to CN on any other maps. Sounds crazy, doesn't it?

Yep, good idea, I do that too :)

BTW I also keep a copy of the map files (gmapprom.gma/img/unl and the .jcv) just in case an update has some undesirable "feature".
