I have purchased a Dual XGPS150A GPS receiver to work with my iPad while in my vehicle on the road. Can this device be used to display my present position in BaseCamp on my laptop?
  • Probable not, depending on what you mean by display. The is probable 30 apps that will display your position on the iPad and you can email you position to your laptop and you can load your position as a waypoint in BaseCamp. BaseCamp does not support current position or even tracking. We use a Nuvi but I used to use BaseCamp as a backup if I had a driver. I plugged my Forerunner in the MMP and used the man over board function to get my current poison. Now a days I use the iPad.

Thanks for the info. When I have 24K topo maps installed in BaseCamp I get good detail for off-road destinations. So I wanted a real-time display from a gps receiver to follow off-road progress. Do you know of equivalent mapping software for the iPad?
  • I sent you a private message, if you are like me, it takes me a month to notice I have a little 1 for a message on this Forumn page

I would be interested in this as well... Basecamp on my laptop with a Garmin Oregon 550 connected. Would this be possible?
  • When your Oregon is connected to your laptop, it is in USB mode and doses not function as a GPS. National Geographics makes Trails Illustrated and sells Topo maps. their application allows you to connects many Garmin GPS and continuously show your position on the map. Your oregon has a NMEA 0183 compatible interface and I think National Geographics might read the NMEA data.

i was actually just reviewing software which will be a little specific as I would like to load some maps made for Garmin by Backroadmaps. I find it interesting the nRoute has the live tracking features and it appears Mapsource did as well at one point but not in the most recent version and Basecamp does not either.

I used GPSD to virtualize USB connection to serial and then connected Com1 in nRoute (nRoute is not detecting it in USB). The Oregon 550 I was able to use in NMEA mode & Garman Spanner mode.
