Editing entries in BaseCamp causes duplication on device

I'm using a nuvi 50 with BaseCamp v3.x. When I import locations and edit their labels, then send back to my device, the edited locations are added to the old locations, so I get duplicates such as location, location1 etc.

Is there any way to do roundtrip editing via BaseCamp without the duplication issue - ie proper syncing?

thanks
  • BC can't edit/delete anything on your nuvi, that's a hardware issue not one with BC. If you need to edit/delete favorites on your nuvi then you have to do it on the device itself.

If I'm doing a major edit of favorites then what I used to do is copy the nuvi into Basecamp. disconnect the nuvi and delete ALL favorites on the nuvi. You can then do the edit in Basecamp and send them all back to the nuvi once you're finished.

This workflow though has been 'broken' with BC 4.0.1, since while BC retains lists/categories when you send to your nuvi, when you import you simply get a long list. I have numerous favorites split into various categories so can no longer use BC the way I used to :(

Thanks for this confirmation - my last option was to delete the file on the navi device so that only the new stuff was entered, but I still need to fiddle with this option as I think there is a temp file created from BaseCamp that is read into it. It could have been so simple for them to code around this issue when they developed BC.
  • There is a temp.gpx file created by BC when it sends information to the nuvi, once it's been read by your nuvi it can/should be deleted. Note this is not a BC issue so the BC developers can't 'code around it'. The way the nuvis work is the issue :)

Everyone has their own favorite workflows. I, and others that I know of, just treat the nav device as a temporary repository - cache, if you will - of data that is needed for a while. BC is the master data base.

When I head out on a trip, I delete everything from my device and download what I need for the trip. When I get home, I delete everything (after uploading any track files, etc. that I want to keep), and reload my local stuff.

BC's data base provides an elegant way to keep it all organized on your computer, and has the tools for proper data management. The device's user interface is way too limited and cumbersome to use for data management purposes.

This workflow has worked very well for me and for others.

I've fixed the issue by doing a hard reset of the device, but all of my settings go back to default. When I try to delete the Current.gpx and empty trash in the hope it will clear just the locations, it reappears with the original locations when I restart the device. Anyone know how to delete just locations via file deletion?
  • current.gpx is simply a one way copy of what's in the nuvi memory, deleting it won't change anything as the nuvi will recreate it on boot up. You need to delete the favourites off the nuvi menu, don't have your model but Tools>My Data>Delete favorites is how I do it on mine.

Unfortunately the nuvi 50 doesn't seem to have this feature. Anyway, I have some good workarounds so thanks all.

NOT quite. Current.gpx is created when you connect your GPS to a computer via usb. If you delete current gpx before you disconnect the gps it will not be recreated when the gps is rebooted.
  • Well you may be right as I have no way of checking exactly when it happens, but everything else I've read talks about it being recreated on reboot :)

Whatever the process, deleting current.gpx will not delete the favorites off your nuvi.
