Basecamp 4.0.1 Crashes with GPS 62st

Have been using Basecamp with my 62st ever since Basecamp came out and had no problems with it crashing.

This morning, I needed to do some work with the software and my 62st for a trip to Yosemite. I started Bascecamp v3.1.4 this morning with my attached 62st and I received the notice that v4.0.1 was available.

I completed the work I needed to do in 3.1.4 and made sure it was saved. I checked for the update again, downloaded it and applied it to v3.1.4. The 62st remained attached. After the update was applied the program attempted to start but it hung. Though the menu bar showed at the top the main screen never appeared and the activity icon just spun. I had to complete a force quit to get out of the program.

After the force quit I started v4.0.1 and the program loaded. As soon as the main screen showed the 62st mounting Basecamp crashed. I completed a shutdown of the computer, removed the 62st from the USB port and restarted. After the computer (MacBook Pro, OS X 10.8) finished the reboot I opened v4.0.1. The program opened normally. I connected the 62st to a USB port and as soon as Basecamp began to show the GPS mounting the program crashed. I tried several more times to connect the 62st to Basecamp and each time it crashed.

I removed Basecamp from my Mac with MacClean, downloaded another version of Basecamp v4.0.1 and installed it from scratch. I rebooted the computer, opened Basecamp and it opened normally. When I attached the 62st the program crashed. I tried various combinations of attaching the GPS then starting Basecamp and starting Basecamp then attaching the GPS. It always crashed.

I again removed v4.0.1 with MacClean and restarted. I installed the previous version 3.1.4, started the program and attached the 62st. It behaved as normal and did not crash. I stopped and started the program with the 62st attached and it operated normally. v3.1.4 behaved normally during each restart and 62st attachment.

Anyone else have this kind of problem?
  • I'm pretty sure the issue is BaseCamp is not handling the data on your 62st. To verify that, move all the data from the /Garmin/GPX folder on your device. You can do this by renaming the folder and creating a new one.

Hopefully you submitted your crash reports with a reference to the 62st so we can figure out what's going on. Sorry for the inconvenience.
  • BC 4.0.1 and 62st crash reports

Haven't had a chance to log the crash reports but tomorrow morning I will try to get that done.
  • Spoke to tech support for trail units a couple of days ago about the crashing problem. They are aware of the problem and have been able to replicate the issue. Advised there probably won't be a fix until a new update is published......

On a side note, Thinking of picking up the Montana 650t due to its larger screen area but I could find no accessory like a carabiner clip for attaching it to gear so it could be active while hiking. I asked tech support about how to attach a Montana 650 to your gear while hiking. After looking at the accessory section of the Montana website the tech guy said it was really more of an auto GPS than a trail GPS and the best idea he could give was to carry it in your hand while backpacking. Now there is a great idea!!! It may be time to pick up another 62st just in case the on the trail devices go away.

One more side note. I have been a Garmin user ever since they brought out their first consumer GPS's. I don't get to the forums very often because I have never had any real problems with any Garmin device I have owned. However, I notice now there is no forum for on the trail devices though I seem to remember there use to be. Am I missing something?
