Can't delete custom routes from Nuvi 550

So I have created a bunch of custom routes on Basecamp and moved them to my Nuvi 550. I deleted some using basecamp and they no longer show up when the device is plugged in. But when I look at the actual device in the tools:my data:load custom routes menu they are still there. Some of them have the same name as desired routes and it's all very confusing. It seems basecamp can only partially delete things that have been removed from a device - they remain in the list on the device itself.

Any idea what I can do?
  • Not sure about the 550 as I don't have one but on the 1490 you can keep .gpx files containing routes on the nuvi and import them again and again. You can only get rid of them should you wish to by deleting the gpx file that contains them. Have a look in the GPX folder on your device and delete any .gpx files apart from current.gpx, they should then be gone for good.

So Basecamp looks in Current.gpx only but the device sees all the routes in all the GPX files? My GPX folder contains Current.gpx and temp.gpx and another folder called Archive that has a file called 1.gpx.

I can delete the Archive folder and the temp file?

How are the routes stored in one single GPX file? I have about 10 routes. And can you get GPX files and move them in there? I use the device to create motorcycle routes. I'd love to get a single route out as a GPX file.
  • Archive and temp can be deleted. How many routes are in the temp.gpx file varies depending how many you sent to your 550 from BC.

I have a number of .gpx 'route files' on my nuvi that I've sent there from BC. I've renamed them, eg France.gpx, so I know in that instance it contains the routes in France I use regularly. I then import them into my nuvi (which can only hold 10 'active' routes at once) when I need them. It's a way of having more routes on my 1490 than the 10 in the garmin specs.

Incidentally your GPS doesn't 'look' in current.gpx at all. Current.gpx is simply a one way copy of what is held in inaccessible internal memory, you could actually delete that too if you want to and it'll just be recreated by your GPS.

OK. I have three GPX files on my device. Current.gpx temp.gpx and 1.gpx in the archive folder.

I went to gpsvisualizer.com which allows you to upload any GPX file and it shows you what's in it. I did this and I realized my routes were distributed all over the place. Current.gpx had an incorrect version of a route I had since "deleted" (I guess not) and the correct version was in temp.gpx. Some routes I want were not in Current.gpx at all - only in temp.

1.gpx in the archive folder contained only "Active Log" routes the device created. I tend to delete these but I guess they stay. Current.gpx also contained the "Active Logs" despite my attempt at deleting them.

So if I were to delete all but Current.gpx I would lose routes.

And why are all the routes mashed together in one GPX file anyway???
  • Our posts crossed, read mine and all should (!) be clear ;)

Note if you have some routes in temp.gpx that you want but haven't imported then you will lose them if you delete temp.gpx. Either save them in BC or import them into the 550 before you delete temp.gpx etc.

Everything is saved in BC so I really wouldn't lose anything.

So how did you make France.gpx? Andwhat if I wanted to send you a gpx file - lets say I wanted to post a recent motorcycle route onto a forum.
  • I created the routes in Basecamp, then sent them in one go to my GPS. That creates temp.gpx that contains what I've just sent. I then renamed that france.gpx.

You can save a route from Basecamp as a gpx file onto your hard drive, on the Windows version its File>Export ... not sure about on the Mac

OK. Current.gpx contains what the unit has in its current useable memory for choosing in the "custom routes" section. The ones that I loaded using tools from "user data".

Temp.gpx contains the list of routes that are in "user data" and can be loaded in for use as one of the 10.

Archive seems to contain the tracks that are automatically generated and time stamped when you ride around with the device on.

If I move a random GPX file into that spot as well, it will also be available to be loaded too?

You have been very helpful in getting me to understand all this. Thanks.
  • Just note that current.gpx contains more than routes, it contains your favourites, waypoints etc. Any other gpx file that you send will contain whatever you put in it, so again it could be a mix of routes, waypoints etc ;)
