BaseCamp 4.0 beta posted

BaseCamp 4.0 is here. We believe this beta to be reasonably stable, but it is a Beta, so there are definitely some quirks to be expected.

If you do find any bugs, crashes or have input of any kind, please let us know. You can respond to this forum post, create a new thread, use the error reporting functionality or use the “Send Feedback…” option within BaseCamp. If you find a bug, don’t just think “It’s Beta, it will be fixed”, please report it.

For Garmin Adventures BaseCamp will display surveys. Please take a second to fill it out let us know what you think. They are very short.

You can download the installer here.

A few words about your data
When you install 4.0.0.4, all your data from 3.3 (or earlier) will be copied. You can keep using 3.3 afterwards, 4.0 will not alter your 3.3 data (but 3.3 also cannot see any changes you make with 4.0).

Change list

This is the list of changes. There is a separate thread What’s new in BaseCamp 4.0 that gives some more explanations (please excuse the Windows screenshots until I get a chance to create a Mac version. The features are basically identical between the two platforms), and a Garmin Adventures thread that introduces that new feature (again please excuse the Windows screenshots).

Added support for Garmin Adventures.
Added support to search for adventures.
Added support for transferring adventures to devices.
Added support for authoring and publishing adventures.
Added chase camera adventure playback.
Other New Features
Added intersection search. If you add an '&' between two roads, it will find the intersection, e.g. 'Main & Elm'
Added support for BaseStation mode for Rinos and Astros. Firmware support coming soon.
Added better trip planning capabilities to a route (you can set arrival/departure/layover times for via-points ).
Added a context menu for the hand and selection tools.
Added a read-only 'Unlisted Data' list that contains all items that are in no other lists.
Added support for waypoint creation date, which will not be changed when updating the waypoint.
Added information in waypoint properties which routes that waypoint is a part of.
Added ability to create a route from a named trail.
Added support for temperature and pressure in track statistics and graphs.
Added support to delete waypoints that are included in a route.
Added ability to perform undos and redos on supported devices.
Added ability to create waypoint from find result on the map.
Added a photo viewer for Geotagged Photos.
Improvements
Improved display when many photos are at the same spot on the map.
Improved XML processing (so it should now be possible to import and export larger gpx files than previously).
Fixes
Fixed numerous issues with finding addresses.
Fixed area calculation for tracks.
Fixed issue where the Geocache symbol was not consistent with found status when importing or adding a geocache.

DRTBYK, I haven't ever seen this issue. Which OS are you running? Let us know if it ever happens again. Thanks for reporting.

    Adventures. . .

I did get another blank "On My Computer" data field while creating an Adventure using a different set of data than when I got this condition previously.

This time I am able to repeat this condition - most of the time. There is nothing unusual about the data in my List that I am using to create the Adventure.

    The list contains:
    Routes
    Tracks
    Waypoints
    Geocaches
    BirdsEye Imagery

I did get a crash on a couple of occasions and sent you the crash reports via the standard BC reporting.

    Error Communicating with Device

As of v4.0.0.5 I'm getting a strange "Error Communicating with Device" condition - even though my Montana is not in USB Mode. It is in Garmin Spanner - just powering from the computer.

On another Adventure topic, when I select an Adventure from the Garmin Adventures list (shouldn't that be "My Adventures"?) the top of the data list pain shows the following Adventure info:

The "More Info" button. . ., I was expecting to get the Adventures Properties (same as selecting the "i" button on the Adventure List name.). Instead, I get info for whatever Adventure data object has the focus: Adventures List Data Object or Adventure List itself. This just seems a bit strange to me since the "More Info" button is located within the Adventure header data - it seems like it should always bring up the Adventure List info no matter where the focus is in BaseCamp. To make matters even worse, if the focus shifts to the Map, this button does nothing.

    Mac Help

The Help info in my v4.0.0.5 install is for Windows BaseCamp.

DRTBYK, the help is being written for the new version right now, and will be available in the release. Since we are switching to an online help system, the only current version is the Windows' help.

The issue with the "More Info" button in the adventure panel will be fixed in release.

We'll look into the issue with the Montana.

Finally, check your PMs regarding the issue with the disappearing lists view.

Thanks for helping with the beta.

    Cheers,

We just found an issue where an invalid adventure that is on a device can cause this error to appear. You wouldn't happen to have sent any adventures to your Montana? If so, try deleting /Garmin/Adventures/ from your device and run BaseCamp again.

LIPKOWIT, thanks for the feedback and I replied to your PM.

Changing to an online-only Help system presents a real problem for non-expert users when they are on the go with BaseCamp. Many folks travel with laptops these days and just when you need some help you won't be anywhere near an Internet connection. At least please make Help a "downloadable option" when installing BaseCamp.

Another vote for the option to download the help file. Like Dan, if I need help when travelling it's rare I've got cell coverage much less internet.
