BaseCamp 4.0 beta posted

BaseCamp 4.0 is here. We believe this beta to be reasonably stable, but it is a Beta, so there are definitely some quirks to be expected.

If you do find any bugs, crashes or have input of any kind, please let us know. You can respond to this forum post, create a new thread, use the error reporting functionality or use the “Send Feedback…” option within BaseCamp. If you find a bug, don’t just think “It’s Beta, it will be fixed”, please report it.

For Garmin Adventures BaseCamp will display surveys. Please take a second to fill it out let us know what you think. They are very short.

You can download the installer here.

A few words about your data
When you install 4.0.0.4, all your data from 3.3 (or earlier) will be copied. You can keep using 3.3 afterwards, 4.0 will not alter your 3.3 data (but 3.3 also cannot see any changes you make with 4.0).

Change list

This is the list of changes. There is a separate thread What’s new in BaseCamp 4.0 that gives some more explanations (please excuse the Windows screenshots until I get a chance to create a Mac version. The features are basically identical between the two platforms), and a Garmin Adventures thread that introduces that new feature (again please excuse the Windows screenshots).

Added support for Garmin Adventures.
Added support to search for adventures.
Added support for transferring adventures to devices.
Added support for authoring and publishing adventures.
Added chase camera adventure playback.
Other New Features
Added intersection search. If you add an '&' between two roads, it will find the intersection, e.g. 'Main & Elm'
Added support for BaseStation mode for Rinos and Astros. Firmware support coming soon.
Added better trip planning capabilities to a route (you can set arrival/departure/layover times for via-points ).
Added a context menu for the hand and selection tools.
Added a read-only 'Unlisted Data' list that contains all items that are in no other lists.
Added support for waypoint creation date, which will not be changed when updating the waypoint.
Added information in waypoint properties which routes that waypoint is a part of.
Added ability to create a route from a named trail.
Added support for temperature and pressure in track statistics and graphs.
Added support to delete waypoints that are included in a route.
Added ability to perform undos and redos on supported devices.
Added ability to create waypoint from find result on the map.
Added a photo viewer for Geotagged Photos.
Improvements
Improved display when many photos are at the same spot on the map.
Improved XML processing (so it should now be possible to import and export larger gpx files than previously).
Fixes
Fixed numerous issues with finding addresses.
Fixed area calculation for tracks.
Fixed issue where the Geocache symbol was not consistent with found status when importing or adding a geocache.
  • Basecamp V4 beta, my install anyway, will not even create a route from two selected waypoints in a folder.

Ah...I missed the fact that you said folder, not list. That would be a bug. We should have that fixed by the release.

I could recreate this, but only by going to full-screen and back. Is that what you did?

Not sure, I did change into Full screen and back, that might have been after I tried the hide/show tool bar thing.

BUT, it is working correctly now.

So that puts this into the impossible to troubleshoot category since it seems to be intermittent, or not reproducible.
  • 4.0.0.4 and dropbox conflict, I use dropbox to keep BC in sync on 3 macs. It works great and even if wifi is not available, the MBP waits until I get connected to sync. BC is writing a file called BaseCampCrash.log to the BaseCamp folder. Currently the file has one line of text:

    BaseCamp_2012-07-07-064452_iMacHome.crash

If I open BC on the iMacHome computer BC is happy but if I open BC on either of the other two computers I get a false crash report. I bet I have sent 25 false crash reports. Once I send or cancel the crash report the current computer host name is written to the BaseCampCrash.log and BC is happy until I change computers.

Is anyone else using DropBox to sync and getting or not getting the false crash report?

    Thanks
  • Just got a wird pattern on a 24k topo map.

  • On a 10.6.8 (yeah, yeah, I know... waiting for 10.8) system I get an assertion failure:

I was using Dropbox to sync between 2 Macs but even copying the Dropbox data to a local copy and setting things to point properly still gives the same failure. If 10.6.8 isn't supported, that's fine, I'm upgrading at the end of the month -- but the install instructions indicate that 10.6.8 is supported.

10.6.8 is supported. There seems to be some issue either with your data or the scheme used to point at your data.
  • I have a very short adventure called Short hike to Mingo Falls which is only 984 feet. If the distance layer is checked and set to miles, the web page is drawing a distance mark for each foot starting with 984 and counting down. This completely covers the track.

Good catch. I'll forward that to the web team.

    Track Filtering

I really like and appreciate the added Track Filtering capability. But, (you knew that was coming) please make it a batch operable feature. Many of us that share rides, and now Adventures, will need to filter many tracks and doing so one at a time is tedious.

    Cheers,

    Unlisted Data

    • Yesterday I created twenty Tracks from Routes in a List named ABC. The Tracks are in the same List (ABC) as the Routes I created them from. I just noticed that the new Tracks also show in the Unlisted Data-List. If I preform an updating operation on a Track in List-ABC that Track in Unlisted Data-List disappears. I have not been able to repeat the "create an object in a List" and have the object duplicated in the Unlisted Data-List issue.

    • I selected several objects in the Unlisted Data-List and dragged those objects to an existing List. I expected the selected objects to disappear from the Unlisted Data-List once I moved them to a List but they remain in the Unlisted Data-List.

    Cheers,
