BaseCamp 4.0 beta posted

BaseCamp 4.0 is here. We believe this beta to be reasonably stable, but it is a Beta, so there are definitely some quirks to be expected.

If you do find any bugs, crashes or have input of any kind, please let us know. You can respond to this forum post, create a new thread, use the error reporting functionality or use the “Send Feedback…” option within BaseCamp. If you find a bug, don’t just think “It’s Beta, it will be fixed”, please report it.

For Garmin Adventures BaseCamp will display surveys. Please take a second to fill it out let us know what you think. They are very short.

You can download the installer here.

A few words about your data
When you install 4.0.0.4, all your data from 3.3 (or earlier) will be copied. You can keep using 3.3 afterwards, 4.0 will not alter your 3.3 data (but 3.3 also cannot see any changes you make with 4.0).

Change list

This is the list of changes. There is a separate thread What’s new in BaseCamp 4.0 that gives some more explanations (please excuse the Windows screenshots until I get a chance to create a Mac version. The features are basically identical between the two platforms), and a Garmin Adventures thread that introduces that new feature (again please excuse the Windows screenshots).

Added support for Garmin Adventures.
Added support to search for adventures.
Added support for transferring adventures to devices.
Added support for authoring and publishing adventures.

  • A menu item is not quite the way it should be.

Choose: View > Hide Tool bar

Then Choose View > It should say show Tool bar, but it still says Hide Tool bar.

    That was fine in 3.3.2

I could recreate this, but only by going to full-screen and back. Is that what you did?
  • Looks like the online view of Garmin adventure was updated after the release after the release of 4.0. Adventures created before the page was changed are showing but the format is not good. I figured I could edit the adventure and publish again and fix the problem. I made a change to the description and clicked back and published. The publish dialog comes up but it will not publish. The only option is cancel.

I went back and tried again and it worked fine. All Garmin adventures I have looked at are now displaying correctly.
  • Probable more important issues but when I click an adventure in BC, depending on zoom level and location of the adventure, I can only see the bottom part of the adventure. The rest of the adventure is outside of the window because adventures do not center on the map.
  • Missing Fuctionality

In previous versions I could select the folder that contained all of the data relevant to a project, pick 2 or 3 waypoints from the folder and tell BaseCamp to create a route. I would then be prompted for a list to place the route in. Where has this function gone?
  • Feature Request:Smartlists

I've got two projects on the go that are totally unrelated, each housed in a folder, each containing multiple lists. It would be nice if smartlists had the ability to be Folder dependent instead of global or list dependent.
  • Is there a list of supported devices Please?

As you noted later, any device can take the device from an adventure, but certain devices will support "taking an adventure". All recent outdoor devices (AKA user data sync devices) will show the data in the Adventures in BaseCamp. All the data in an adventure can be deleted from the device by deleting the Adventure. For older devices, the data is just merged into the data already there.
Tinkering more with the Adventures feature, It seems to me that this is essentially the implementation of Multiple collections. I like what it does for my data management. Well Sorta, it is some improvement in Data management. Logistics are still klunky in some ways.

Frankly, that's not what it's intended for...which is part of the reason it would be klunky. They are intended to be...Adventures...that you want to share with friends, family, and the Garmin Community at large.

Is there a way to Import directly into an Adventure?

I can create items inside of an Adventure and they are exclusive to that Adventure.
i.e. those Items are not in My Collection this is a very good thing....

Can we have lists and folders inside of an Adventure ? please?

    In short...no & not yet.

I was able to delete items from inside the Unlisted Items.
I hope you don't take that function away.
Removing the Junk from my collection is one of the things I wanted to do for quite some time, and that provided a way to do that without ruining all my other things in there.

Cleaning up myCollection is the main reason for the Unlisted Items folder, so deleting will not be removed.

Other than the prompting thing, we still do. I don't thing BaseCamp ever prompted for the list.

It's not as elegant, but you can add as many lists as you want to the smart list and choose "match any".

Ah... I shouldn't have had to do this. I re-installed 3.2.x and grabbed these screen shots.
This is the popup you get when you select 2 waypoints in a Folder and select create route from waypoints.

The dropdown gives you a list of the lists in the folder that will accept the data, in this case a route.

Basecamp V4 beta, my install anyway, will not even create a route from two selected waypoints in a folder.

I keep hoping... True elegance would be actual waypoint category support and the ability to have a smartlist filter on category. Working on an 11" MacBook Air, my screen real estate is at a premium. I want to do more with less. The last thing I want are more lists.
