BaseCamp 4.0 beta posted

BaseCamp 4.0 is here. We believe this beta to be reasonably stable, but it is a Beta, so there are definitely some quirks to be expected.

If you do find any bugs, crashes or have input of any kind, please let us know. You can respond to this forum post, create a new thread, use the error reporting functionality or use the “Send Feedback…” option within BaseCamp. If you find a bug, don’t just think “It’s Beta, it will be fixed”, please report it.

For Garmin Adventures BaseCamp will display surveys. Please take a second to fill it out let us know what you think. They are very short.

You can download the installer here.

A few words about your data
When you install 4.0.0.4, all your data from 3.3 (or earlier) will be copied. You can keep using 3.3 afterwards, 4.0 will not alter your 3.3 data (but 3.3 also cannot see any changes you make with 4.0).

Change list

This is the list of changes. There is a separate thread What’s new in BaseCamp 4.0 that gives some more explanations (please excuse the Windows screenshots until I get a chance to create a Mac version. The features are basically identical between the two platforms), and a Garmin Adventures thread that introduces that new feature (again please excuse the Windows screenshots).

Added support for Garmin Adventures.
Added support to search for adventures.
Added support for transferring adventures to devices.
Added support for authoring and publishing adventures.
Added chase camera adventure playback.
Other New Features
Added intersection search. If you add an '&' between two roads, it will find the intersection, e.g. 'Main & Elm'
Added support for BaseStation mode for Rinos and Astros. Firmware support coming soon.
Added better trip planning capabilities to a route (you can set arrival/departure/layover times for via-points ).
Added a context menu for the hand and selection tools.
Added a read-only 'Unlisted Data' list that contains all items that are in no other lists.
Added support for waypoint creation date, which will not be changed when updating the waypoint.
Added information in waypoint properties which routes that waypoint is a part of.
Added ability to create a route from a named trail.
Added support for temperature and pressure in track statistics and graphs.
Added support to delete waypoints that are included in a route.
Added ability to perform undos and redos on supported devices.
Added ability to create waypoint from find result on the map.
Added a photo viewer for Geotagged Photos.
Improvements
Improved display when many photos are at the same spot on the map.
Improved XML processing (so it should now be possible to import and export larger gpx files than previously).
Fixes
Fixed numerous issues with finding addresses.
Fixed area calculation for tracks.
Fixed issue where the Geocache symbol was not consistent with found status when importing or adding a geocache.
  • When you right click a geo object like a waypoint in the Unlisted Data list (UDL), I think Delete should be grayed out because the list is read only. Don't change the ability to delete from the Collection when your in and the unlisted data list. This is the only use I have found for the UDL.

When I move a geo data object to a list, it remains in the unlisted data list. pretty much makes the UDL useless after you change a list. I would much prefer to have the option to have a smart folder that would select unlisted geo objects.
  • Slightly OT, but very sorry to see that the latest zumo 66x firmware released today still does not support the "silent" shaping points created in BC.

I tried to install the Beta but it would not start up after insulation completed (successfully). I sent the OS X (10.7.4) Problem Report via email to the Mac BaseCamp ID.

Bummer. I was looking forward to working with the Adventures features.:(

Forgot to add that the list of "Other New Features" is outstanding. Looking forward to using v4.

    Cheers,
  • While creating an adventure in the second step window, I filled in all the required fields and could not get the continue button to light up. I filled in optional fields and still no continue. I hit the back button to the first window and then went forward and the continue button was ready to be clicked. The 'Hiking the Appalachian Trail' adventure published as is should.
  • The information window on the route is very helpful. I assume the times are determined by BC after factoring any time information added to start, end, and via.

I wish this page showed the route preferences used to calculate the route like shortest of fastest. It would be even better if we could change the preferences for this route only before recalculating. A recalculate button could be used to save changed activities and route preferences.

The Nuvi has a nice route summary of thing like average moving speed, average overall speed, time moving, time stopped, etc. Is there an easy way of capturing this information in BC with the route or track?

Thanks for the continuing updates. I have needed the search for intersection of roads in the past. It works well now.
  • One feature I (think I) forgot to mention is the ability to see which routes a waypoint is in. In the new Association tab it shows the list, but now it also shows all routes that it is in.

Added ability to perform undos and redos on supported devices.

Is there a list of supported devices Please?

It launched for me. So I consider myself lucky, so far.

Is there some restrictions on Adventures? i.e. Are all (older) devices capable of reading adventures?

    EDIT:

It seems that Adventures can be exported as GPX files so any device should be able to read those.

Tinkering more with the Adventures feature, It seems to me that this is essentially the implementation of Multiple collections. I like what it does for my data management. Well Sorta, it is some improvement in Data management. Logistics are still klunky in some ways.

Is there a way to Import directly into an Adventure?

I can create items inside of an Adventure and they are exclusive to that Adventure.
i.e. those Items are not in My Collection this is a very good thing....

Can we have lists and folders inside of an Adventure ? please?

I was able to delete items from inside the Unlisted Items.
I hope you don't take that function away.
Removing the Junk from my collection is one of the things I wanted to do for quite some time, and that provided a way to do that without ruining all my other things in there.

A menu item is not quite the way it should be.

Choose: View > Hide Tool bar

Then Choose View > It should say show Tool bar, but it still says Hide Tool bar.

    That was fine in 3.3.2

Strange, I couldn't do that on mine :(

    But I agree, it's a feature that's needed :)
  • Looks like the online view of Garmin adventure was updated after the release after the release of 4.0. Adventures created before the page was changed are showing but the format is not good. I figured I could edit the adventure and publish again and fix the problem. I made a change to the description and clicked back and published. The publish dialog comes up but it will not publish. The only option is cancel.
