Routing methods...

Greetings everyone! I'm using BaseCamp to route a motorcycle trip I'll be taking in a couple of weeks. I'm not sure what the best method is to create a route. My current route is one list with my Waypoints along the way. I end up using a spreadsheet to calculate the various miles ridden, hours of riding per day. If I created a route per day it would save the hassle of creating a spreadsheet.

My question is what method would you recommend for a ride I'm planning? I will be taking 2 1/2 weeks to make this run. Do you recommend one continuous list or break it down in sections or by days.

Thank you in advance!

  • Personally, I find it much more manageable to plan day by day. I keep all of my routes in one list, waypoints in another, but both nested inside a folder. I name the routes using yyyymmdd format and then use letter suffix if there are alternates for a specific day. This way the routes come up in order of use when they're loaded into the GPS. Creating one very long route as you have shown will almost always cause the GPS to truncate the route as they can only handle so many route points in a single route.

Thanks for the feedback. I started creating daily routes and as you suggested within a folder. I verified that all the information transferred correctly to my device. I'm still getting accustomed to the software as it seems to be able to transfer other information besides data coordinates. This is probably one of the most thought out rides I've ever planned since I'm able to use these tools.

    Thanks again!

  • I prefer the day routes but I usually keep a complete route going and coming in addition to the day routes. I only put day routes on the gps.

I placed my day routes within a folder and find it much easier to calculate my ride for that day. I guess that's why they call it day routes :)

    Question:
I tried to export the files on my iMac and import on my MacBook Air and I seem to have lost the folder organization. Is there a file I can just copy on my iMac into the MBA that will retain the folder and route structure?

Thanks again for all the help!

Here's how I do it. In Basecamp on my iMac, I select "My Collection" by clicking on it in the left column of Basecamp. Then I go to the File menu and select "Backup" from the drop-down menu. I save the backup file that's created to my desktop (do not fiddle with the filename at all). I then turn on AirDrop on the iMac and the MacBook Air. On the iMac, I drag the backup file of "My Collection" and drop it onto the icon for the MacBook in AirDrop, then click on the appropriate box when it asks if I want to transfer this file to the MacBook. Now, on the MacBook, I accept the file transfer and save it to the downloads folder. I start Basecamp on the MacBook, go to the "File" menu and select "Restore". I then select the Backup file from the Downloads folder. It will warn you that this action will replace the existing data on your MacBook with the data in the Backup file. Click in the affirmative and presto, "My Collection" on your MacBook is a complete duplicate of what's on your iMac. Folders, Lists etc. are all there with the appropriate data, i.e., waypoints, routes, tracks etc.

And, as everyone else has already said, create a route for each day's planned ride. If I'm starting a long ride out west and back, the first day's route is labeled W1, the next day's W2 and so on. For the return journey, I name them E1, E2 etc. If I create two options for a particular day, I call them E1A and E1B. I also have a name for each route to go along with the alpha-numeric designation, e.g., "W1 Home-Wadsworth OH", "W2 Wadsworth-St. Charles MO" and so on. If I create day rides at one, or more of my stops along the way, I number them L1, L2 etc. All this stuff I keep in a folder I create for each trip. That folder will have all my waypoints, routes, tracks etc. That data, of course, will also appear in "My Collection".
