Creating waypoints (probably a case of Duh!)

Hi. Newbie to both this forum and GPS for walking.

Can I use basecamp to type up waypoints and transfer them to my Etrex 10?

The program keeps saying my coordinates are invalid. It seems it won't accept British grid numbers although I did change things in Preferences to British National Grid.

I did write a much longer post but after clicking Send, the forum said I hadn't logged in (I had) and my post was lost.

I don't seem to have any problem inputting BNG coordinates (e.g, SC 39630 86752) and creating waypoints at that location.

What maps are you using and can you provide an example coordinate that BC won't take?

    Cheers,

    I clicked on Create Route.

That gave me the option of Drag Start Point Here, Drag Destination Here. They're both no good to me as I just have the map I was given the chance to download by Garmin which is no use to anyone for hill walks surely.

I clicked on Create Waypoint At Coordinates. The box wouldn't accept British grid numbers. It said they were invalid. It wouldn't accept your coordinates SC 39630 86752 so obviously I'm doing something silly.

I'm kind of bewildered by the whole thing and what I can do with this prog.

Also, can I download Ordnance Survey explorer maps into Basecamp?

Let's first focus on the Coordinate issue.

Did you type the complete coordinate into the "Create Waypoint at Coordinate..." input box? I did notice that when you start to type it will display the message "Invalid Coordinates" but if you keep typing once the coordinate is complete the message will go away.

As for maps, any Garmin compatible map set can be installed. If the Ordnance Survey maps can be/ are converted to Garmin gmap format you should be good to go. I do recall reading of others from the UK who have these maps but I just don't know where you might obtain them.

Although not compiled to install in BaseCamp, you could use these Topo maps to load the .IMG file onto your GPS and then with the GPS attached see if BaseCamp will read/index them.

Yes I put the whole of your example coordinates in the input box and got "invalid coordinates".

I am unable to replicate your condition. You might try an uninstall and reinstall of v3.3.2 - after running a Backup of your BaseCamp.

It sounds like what you're doing should work, unless you haven't set your preferences to use the British National Grid. If you look at the waypoint dialog by double clicking on a waypoint in user data pane (bottom left), if you look at the coordinates by clicking the Advanced tab, what format do they show up in?

As for OS explorer maps, if you download them from Garmin onto a SD card or the device directly, the maps will show up while the device is plugged in.

Do you have to have the device plugged in when typing in your coordinates to make a route? I've found Basecamp will recognise what I type in so long as my device is plugged in.

Anyway I got it to do what I wanted it to do.
  • I'm glad you got it to work, but having the device plugged in shouldn't change any behavior except adding the ability to view the maps on the device.
  • And if you're after maps to use in Basecamp try www.talkytoaster.info as you appear to be in the UK, they're free and excellent for walking/geocaching. Note that you can view them in Basecamp but your Etrex 10 isn't able to accept additional maps.
