GeoTagging Photos - Request

This may not be feasible but if BaseCamp would allow me to select photos from iPhoto/Aperture (I think OS X has a call to bring up Media or your photos) and use the lat/lon stored assuming the photo had been geotagged, I would use the photo feature in BaseCamp. It would be super easy to create waypoints from iPhoto/Aperture.

Thanks

On a similar but reverse note, i'd like to be able to use basecamp to geotag the photos as it does now, but then imbed the geotag data into the file so iphoto gets the lat/long as well.

Yeah these would be great features to have ;)
  • Unless I'm missing something in your request, BaseCamp should already do both of these. If a photo has already been geotagged, simply import it or drag it into BaseCamp and it will place a waypoint and attach the photo to it. As for geotagging, if you track match photos (under the track's context menu or on the track properties dialog), the default action is to place the coordinates in the photo, unless you uncheck the option on the dialog. See attached screenshot.
  • Most Apple users store photos in iPhoto or Aperture and many applications have a media button that brings up all photos stored in iPhoto or Aperture to browse and select. It not a show stopper but as you travel and take pictures with your iPhone or geotag your photos using garmin tracks and iPhoto or Aperture, the media button would make it easier to bring the picture in BC or create a waypoint from the coordinates. Currently I have to export the picture from Aperture before I can use it in BC.

    Thanks

In the file Import menu, if you go to Media>Photos in the blue sidebar and then select "iPhoto" you should be able to access your iPhoto library. I don't have Aperture installed here, but its library should show up next to iPhoto's. Is that what you wanted?
  • Wow, are you guys good or what. That it, Thanks

The basecamp side of geotagging works fine. Importing/matching photos to tracks shows nicely geotagged photos in basecamp, but I don't use basecamp to look at my photos, that's what iphoto is for. The geotagged photos do not show the lat/long when viewed in iphoto. I think the problem for me might be that the photos are already in iphoto before geotagging them in basecamp. If i geotag with basecamp before importing into iphoto the lat/long is there. When i connect my camera the photos automatically get sent to iphoto so it's hard to bypass that step and get them into basecamp first.

there is a setting in iPhoto to NOT import photos automatically.
  • iPhoto has geotagging feathers and with the method described above, you can bring you geotagged photos directly to BaseCamp. I use a program called HoudahGeo. I let Aperture or iPhoto import my pictures and open HoudahGeo. From HoundaGeo I select the photos in iPhoto I want to GeoTag. I have used at least 8 different Garmin GPS devices and HoundaGeo will read the GPX track directly from the device. One of the GPS, I can't remember which, I have to point to the gpx track from the mounted volume. GeoTagging is automatic with HoundaGeo and it writes the geotagged information back to iPhoto. Just select the photo from BaseCamp and you have a waypoint in the correct location.
  • In addition, Aperture can geotag photos from GPX files exported from BaseCamp. I do it all the time and it's really awesome — I can geotag tons of photos in about five clicks.

There's a video showing how it works on YouTube.
