Track time incorrect

Just uploaded about 5 days worth of tracks to BaseCamp only to discover that the time stamps on the track points are incorrect.
The time on my GPS was accurate (GPSmap 78s) when recording but the tracks are now 3 hours earlier then the local time where they were recorded.
Is there a reason for this? And, can I edit the tracks to get the correct local time?

Reason for this is geotagging photos, if the track is incorrect, the photos will show up in the wrong place.

Thank you for any assistance.
  • Timestamps in tracks are always recorded in GMT, not the local time.
BaseCamp shows the time relative to your local time zone; apparently your tracks were recorded in a time zone three hours later than the time zone your computer uses.
This is completely normal, and you shouldn't try change the timestamps. Every (decent) geotag program contains an option to set the right time zone offset for your photos.

My time stamps are not recorded with respect to GMT.

I'll be in Europe (+6 hours with respect to Eastern Canada) and my time stamp will show 02:47:XX (the time back home) when I have actually hit the road at 08:47:XX in Europe.

And this after I've set the time zone to Munich (Europe) which shows the correct time when I am there.

What gives??? Every year it is the same issue and I keep thinking I forgot to set the time to local time which obviously has no affect on my time stamps.

I have it figured out thanks to a member on another forum.

To see the correct time you need to set your PC cock to the time of the location of the track in question.

My track was in Europe, I now set my PC clock 6 hours ahead and the time reads correctly.

Kind of dumb on Garmin's part! Why does it not log the time I have running on my GPS that I set the time zone to?
  • Logging the local time would cause inconsistencies when crossing time zone borders, or when the change from DST to standard time (or vice versa) occurs. The only correct way is to log the UTC time (or GMT; that's practically the same).
Garmin could add an option to BaseCamp for selecting which time zone to use for displaying track data...
