hi

yesterday I bought city navigator online in the garmin store, it was installed directly on my gps etrex 20.

when my gps is connected to my mac all is fine, I can open the city navigator map in basecamp but it works very very slowly. so i copied the files to my dekstop to be able to use teh map on my mac without gps connection and basecamp now won't install nor recognise these files.

i have gone back to the shop where i bought my gps but there they only had pc and routemap.

please can anyone help me out here?

how do i do this with other maps? what file extensions does basecamp allow?

thx
Eva
  • Go back to myGarmin and with your GPS connected ask to download the map again, only this time look very carefully for the Advanced Option checkbox to download to your computer.

Dan, that's not the way downloaded copies of City Navigator work. They are not the same as the Lifetime updater, instead all you get is a pre-packaged gmapsupp.img file - like you would have if you purchased a pre-loaded data card. There is no option for installing the map on your computer.I purchased City Navigator in this format for my Montana.

If you want to use your map in Basecamp, you will need to either connect the GPS itself (as you have tried), or alternately copy the Garmin folder from your GPS to a USB flash drive. You will then be able to access the map anytime the flash drive is connected.

If you really don't want to connect any device, use Disk Utility on your mac to create a new disk image, then copy the Garmin folder from your GPS to the disk image. Now you should be able to access the map by double-clicking the .dmg file to mount the image.

That's about the best you can do. The downloaded maps are not provided in the same format as maps that are distributed on DVD or as the Lifetime updater.

Just to clarify. That's true for new product downloads. Updates, whether Lifetime or OneTime, allow you to install the maps on your PC as Dan described.

That's why for initial purchases I buy the CD/DVD version.
  • Oops, missed that in the OP's message. I just assumed it was an update because 99.9% of the time that's how it is on nuvis and zumos.

This is one of the things that is frustrating to me about Garmin. In the Basecamp marketing language online, it says "Load map data from your handheld device, or import maps you’ve downloaded or purchased on DVD or microSDTm card." It doesn't say you can't see a map unless a particular device it is associated with is plugged in.

If I buy a map, I would like to be able to see a track I've imported on it in Basecamp without needing to have the device from which the track came from plugged in.

You can do that, and I explained how above

If you really don't want to connect any device, use Disk Utility on your mac to create a new disk image, then copy the Garmin folder from your GPS to the disk image.

But really, if it's important to use your map on your computer, purchase the DVD version. The files are then permanently installed.
