How to get detail on BaseCamp

Hi,
I just received a Nuvi 1450LMT. I have loaded the latest North American map and installed Basecamp on my mac. When I start basecamp the map has no detail - only major roads. I went to the Garmin page and 'unlocked' the map on the Nuvi, but I still don't see any smaller roads in BaseCamp. What am I doing wrong??

Thanks,
Jim

While your nuvi is connected to your computer and BaseCamp is running, you should be able to select its map from the "Maps" item in the menu bar. This lists all your maps in one location (installed on device and computer).

To see what maps your nuvi itself has, look to the left column in the BaseCamp window, under "My Garmin Devices". Find your Garmin device and then expand "Maps". You can click on any one of the map items to switch to that map.

Thanks for the reply. That worked nicely.
  • Your 1450LMT will give you about 4 map updates per year and you should be able to create a garmin account and download the latest city navigator map now. If you click the advance button when download the map you can have the map installed on your computer and use the map without having to have your Nuvi attached.

    Hi Pseabolt,
I created the account and downloaded the map to the Nuvi earlier today. I just tried and the Updater software tells me that tere is no new update available. Is there a way to trigger it to download it just to the Mac???

OK. Just figured it out. It's downloading right now.

    Thanks for the reply,

  • I should have warned you to plug in your Nuvi. Hope you checked advance and told it to save to your Mac. If not you can do the download again but the download takes an hours or so depending on connection speed. You can find the map in the Garmin Map folder (/Users/YourComputerName/Library/Application Support/Garmin)
If you copy the map to another Mac, you can use your Nuvi and Garmin connection to unlock the map for the second computer.

    Pseabolt,
You were correct. It did take hours - and we have a really fast fiber-optic line. Don't know where the hold-up is. Anyway, my next question relates to the power line for the car. Yesterday when I plugged it in to the cigar lighter a small green LED illuminated when I was trying the Nuvi out. Today, there was no light. So, I don't know if it was supplying power or if the Nuvi was running on it's battery. Is there a way to tell? Also, are these power lines covered by the warranty?? I hope it hasn't failed this early in it's life.

    Thanks,

    Jim
  • City Navigator is 2.28 GB in size and garmin probably servers each connection at DSL speeds. DANHAM active on this forum, Moderator of nüvi forum,

is probably a better place to ask about your Nuvi but in short your power supply is under warranty if it came in the box like mine. If you turn your Nuvi on with the power cable plugged into a power source and the Nuvi, the Nuvi will show battery on startup if no power is being supplied. I would wiggle the plug connecting to your car, and check the connection there first. If you have connection to the car, I would call Garmin tech support.

    Pseabolt,
So, I followed your advice and call tech support. Wonder of wonders, if you use a small coin ( I used a US dime), push down on the metal tip of the power line (the part that goes into the cigar lighter), it will retract and enable the coin to act as a screwdriver and enable you to access the fuse located inside. Mine was broken so I must have received a faulty fuse. The car is and was fine so it's not that.

Anyway, Garmin don't send the fuses out so for around a dollar I'll get one at the local auto parts store.

Very cool. For the record, the Garmin guy I dealt with was very pleasant, knowledgeable and helpful.
