Find intersection or Place

In BaseCamp 3.3.0.2 Beta I put Tobyhanna Army Depot (In PA) at the center of the screen. Enterered the name, as spelled on the screen, in find and it came up not found. I selected All points of interest. Am I doing something wrong?

How do I enter an intersection in Find?

Thanks,

Len
  • I don't think your are doing anything wrong, it has been my experience that just because it is on the map does not mean it will always be found. I don't believe BC supports searching for intersections either. If I don't find something in BaseCamp first try, I go to the web and bring it in as a waypoint.
  • The problem is because it is not a POI. Take a look at the map (in my case 2012.30) and it shows a very similar text label for the nearby Tobyhanna State Park. Why does BC find that no problem? Because if you look on Rt. 423 east of the Army Depot you will see a green pine tree icon which is a POI. There is no such icon for the depot.

This is not a Garmin problem, possibly not even a Navteq problem. If you are really curious and have time on your hands [g], go to the county offices and see how the parcels of land are coded at the location of the depot. Navteq buys a lot of this data from local/regional governments and fixes as much of it as it can, but there are still lots of errors and inconsistencies.

I agree with your observations re: POI's. But, the real problem is that there is no Intersection Search function.

    Feature Request!

I agree with the need for a way to locate an intersection. When I use a web site for interesting motorcycle roads they generally referance intersections to lay out the scenic route.

I hope Garmin picks up on this.

    Thanks,

  • We'll add intersection search to our feature wish list. Thanks for the feedback.

True, but if something is printed on a map, I would think the text is in the data base and BaseCamp could search for the text. Is Tobyhanna Army Depot not in a format that can be found by BC? If BC finds Tobyhanna Army Depot does BC know its location on the map?
  • Not sure I understand your question. BC seems to be able to find any POI or address that matches the search terms. It will not return items that do not fit any of the search categories, which in addition to POI name and street address, also include User Data, Garmin Connect, OpenCaching, and Named Trails. Text labels, unless they coincide with one of these, are not found.

In my part of the world, there is a large national park called Cape Cod National Seashore, for example. If you search for that it returns two POIs with that name. When you click on them it takes you to one of only two icons labeled "Cape Cod National Seashore," not to one of many text labels which say the exact same thing. The park covers portions of six towns and a 40-mile stretch of Cape shoreline, so the map shows lots of text labels saying Cape Cod National Seashore, but only two POIs. There is therefore no way to search for that text label. The icon for the Tobyhanna depot apparently never made it into the map data.

  • You understand, I was wondering why BS doesn't have a category to search map info. Information printed on the map but not a POI, address, etc. I would think it would be helpful if BC searched for text labels such that anything text item on the map could be found.

I posted this question to Garmin Support and was told that BC doesn't support find by intersection. In the reply I was directed to this forum for information. As I see one of the replies here was from an applications person so I feel we do have Garmin's attention.

It is great to deal with a company that listens to the customer.
