Turn Off Auto Recalculate on Routes Created Outside the GPS!

After having done so much work building routes in Basecamp or Mapsource, why can't those routes be used without recalculation on our gps units?

I'm speaking specifically about the Montana here - many people are waiting for Garmin to fix this automatic "Route Recalculation" issue before giving up their antique X76 units.

Many people simply won't buy a unit which does not take routes as downloaded and just navigate them, assuming of course that the same maps reside and are enabled on the gps.

Actually, this brings up an idea - maybe the route you download from Basecamp could have settings included which 'enable' the required map, assuming it's on the gps.

I'll grant that this thread has wandered around quite a bit. But did you read the very first post?

So why is it "hijacking" to discuss the Montana, when it specifically addresses the OP's point?

The focus of the forum is about computer software not unit software.
So the OP is hijacking the forum. Not a bad thing because these things need to be asked and answered. Garmin should have a forum where talking about the devices is the focus.

Where are the GPS Product forums...

I have to agree with Denny's point. This thread was started due to the affinity between the Montana features (or potential features) and BaseCamp.

The Montana Team stepped up and fixed the issue (although creating a new issue in the process).

If Garmin North America would step up and provide GPS Product threads under this Forum with participation by product development as is practiced here, we wouldn't feel like the shoemakers children. Seems the Garmin Germany site get's the funding to support this. That indicates to me that Garmin is taking for granted their largest [US] market.

At least the Montana Team does read some of the more active Fora that focus on their product.

    Cheers,

The point that this thread doesn't fit into Garmin's Basecamp forum has some validity. But then again, it could be considered to fit Garmin's posting guidelines since it's related to the use of Basecamp and not just "how do I use my Montana":

    https://forums.garmin.com/showthread.php?t=4818

In particular, do not post questions or comments about how to use a Garmin hardware product unless it is being used with BaseCamp for Mac.

OTOH, turning a thread about routing on the Montana with Basecamp into a discussion of what products Garmin should support in their forums might also be considered "hijacking". :D

    Foiled AGAIN !!!!!!!
  • It appears to me this thread is about getting a route created in BC loaded on your GPS without the route changing. Montana get mention so much because it is the only (not counting the older units) GPS capable of the critically needed feature. I would be surprised if the Nuvi line is capable of accepting the firmware update required to Implement the feature. Most Nuvi users just upload waypoints because of the issue, too much hassle to create a route and check it on the GPS and find it has changed. I think BC is the best thing Garmin has to combat the smart phones or tables and if the Nuvi group could drag a route to their GPS and preserve the BC route you would have many more Nuvi users creating routes.

Do you have to be actually navigating the Route on the Montana for it follow the roads?

I have a very detailed Route I built in BC using Topo 24k maps (that I have installed on my Montana). In BC the route follows along all the roads I have selected, but when I open the Route on the Montana the route shows as straight lines between all the marks I selected in BC when building the route?

I'm just trying to verify the route on the handheld before I drive half way across the Country to kick off this adventure and the current output has me pretty nervous.

Make sure you are using the right activity type when you open the route in the Montana. If you're set for "Direct Routing", that's why you're seeing straight lines.

I've tried it on Automobile, motorcycle, ATV/Offroad
    Calculation Method - Prompted
Lock on road, Tried Yes and No
    Off route Calc - Prompted

    Which Montana are you using?

Wondering if you are using the 650T?

Do you have both the 24 K and 100K maps selected at the same time?
The 100K maps are not routable, so that might be the problem??
  • In addition to Denny's expert advice, take a close look at your route on your computer, zoomed in. Sometimes a tiny error in waypoint placement can cause the GPS to think you have left the road (or routable trail) and it reverts to straight-line off-road navigation.
