Turn Off Auto Recalculate on Routes Created Outside the GPS!

After having done so much work building routes in Basecamp or Mapsource, why can't those routes be used without recalculation on our gps units?

I'm speaking specifically about the Montana here - many people are waiting for Garmin to fix this automatic "Route Recalculation" issue before giving up their antique X76 units.

Many people simply won't buy a unit which does not take routes as downloaded and just navigate them, assuming of course that the same maps reside and are enabled on the gps.

Actually, this brings up an idea - maybe the route you download from Basecamp could have settings included which 'enable' the required map, assuming it's on the gps.
  • Now if they could just do that with the nuvis :D
  • I seriously considered a Montana as a replacement for the Nuvi but the absent of Lane Assist / Junction View killed that option. I wonder if even the high ended Nuvi is capable of the firmware update to allow routes not to change when imported from BC. Does anyone have information when or if the feature will be available for the Nuvi line?

    Thanks
  • The Montana actually does support Lane Assist (the small arrows in the top/left corner); no Junction View though.
I don't think nüvis will ever get the "preserve route" option, but you never know...

That is correct - the Montana shows speed limits and lane assist, but no junction view or traffic receiver support. Personally I don't find junction view or traffic useful, so I use my Montana for everything while I haven't even turned on my Nuvi 3790t for months.

I would have to agree that you won't see the no-recalc feature on the Nuvi. They are going completely in the opposite direction with the Nuvi line; it doesn't even support routes at all anymore, just "trips".

I have owned a Nuvi 650, 205, 5000, 1350t and 3790t. I think that's enough for one lifetime and I have no plans to buy another. If they would come out with an advanced vehicle oriented unit - like a Montana with a 7" screen for example - I would be willing to spend real money for that however. :)

They should probably just rename this thread "The Montana" since 38 of 64 post mention it. Now that is truly an indicator of something done very right.

    Cheers,
  • A few more questions about the Montana. Does it support deleting waypoints, tracks, routes, from BC? I now own 3 lifetime (LTM) City Navigator maps tied a different Nuvi. LTM are not transferable if you sell a Nuvi. Short of a hack, what is the options for moving BC maps to the Montana? I assume 100K and 24K topo moves OK, I have DVD's. What are the options for life time City Navigator maps for Montanta?

    Thanks

I'll grant that this thread has wandered around quite a bit. But did you read the very first post?

So why is it "hijacking" to discuss the Montana, when it specifically addresses the OP's point?

A few more questions about the Montana.

All of Garmin's new handhelds support editing data on the device itself - Montana, Oregon 450, GPSMap62/78, Etrex 20 and 30. Maybe a few others as well?

What are BC maps? British Columbia? BaseCamp? AFAIK the DVD versions of the 100k and 24k Garmin topo's are not locked and can be installed on any device that you own. This has been confirmed in other threads on this site as well as elsewhere.

Your City Navigator options are the same as any other Garmin handheld. If you want it, you need to buy it. If you want lifetime maps you would have to first purchase City Navigator on DVD, then separately purchase a lifetime subscription. That is the only way to get lifetime maps unless your device came pre-installed with City Navigator (like the Nuvi or Zumo).

The cheapest/easiest way to get City Navigator on the unit would be to purchase the Lower 49 version download. Garmin sends you a 10% discount code when you register the unit, so your cost would be $57 if you go this route (which is what I personally did). Or you could get the full City Navigator North America for $72 using the discount code.

Maybe you can find other good deals from third party vendors of the DVD if you shop around?
