Turn Off Auto Recalculate on Routes Created Outside the GPS!

After having done so much work building routes in Basecamp or Mapsource, why can't those routes be used without recalculation on our gps units?

I'm speaking specifically about the Montana here - many people are waiting for Garmin to fix this automatic "Route Recalculation" issue before giving up their antique X76 units.

Many people simply won't buy a unit which does not take routes as downloaded and just navigate them, assuming of course that the same maps reside and are enabled on the gps.

Actually, this brings up an idea - maybe the route you download from Basecamp could have settings included which 'enable' the required map, assuming it's on the gps.

Works, too! It's great to have multiple profiles with very distinct map preferences, and to be able to flip over from one to another via shortcuts.

Much faster than enabling/disabling maps in Setup/Map

Thanks go to the Garmin Montana Team!

Garmin just released a Montana beta today that appears to address the recalculation issue (along with some other major fixes)

Anyone know if this 'recalc' issue will/has been fixed in the Zumo 660?

    TIA

The zumo 660 "fixed" that issue quite some time ago. Criteria is using the same map version on both Computer and GPS.

OK, thx! How about the ability to set recalculation to 'on,off, auto'? I saw a review of the unit that claims there is a setting for this, but Garmin tech support told me this morning that the feature does not exist??

I think you will find that the Recalculation you are referring to is for when you deviate from the route that the GPS is following not for when the route is initially loaded. In my experience, a well defined route ie waypoints to define critical routing from Mapsource or Basecamp and the same maps in BC and on the GPS will resolve most problems. However, the odd "faff" is almost inevitable unless you are very lucky and it really does help to have a good overview of where you are going and which roads you want to be on.

I got the unit yesterday, and yes, contrary to what Garmin support says, there is recalculate 'on,auto, prompted'. And yes, that applies to running routes when you deviate from them. Thanks for your reply!

Loading routes from Mapsource, using the same mapset, gives me EXACT copies of my routes in the 'custom routes' menu as expected. No 'recalculating' when I load or execute them. Any route that does not use the same mapset does not show up in the 'custom routes' menu, but can be 'imported', but of course this causes a recalc.

Given the 20 route limit of the 660, it would be nice to be able to store additional routes in the SD memory and move/import them into the units 'custom route' list without a recalc. It appears that you can only put .gpx routes into the SD memory and then import them, with a recalc, into the Zumo's memory. Bummer!

Anyone know a way around this? Garmin advertises the ability to pass routes back and forth between Zumo owners by using SD memory, but if the routes always recalc in the process you don't always get the original route, even if a common mapset is used.
  • @Adamkski:

My experience has been that all routes transferred to my zumo 660 go through some degree of recalc, no matter whether they are placed directly in Custom Routes, imported from internal storage, or imported from an SD card. Just because the screen may not say "recalculating" or "calculating" does not mean that there is any guarantee that the route is untouched.

Rather than cripple yourself by limiting selection to 20 routes, therefore, just be sure to create routes that are -- to the extent possible -- recalc-proof. Use enough shaping or "real" waypoints and no recalc will wreck them no matter whether that recalc is triggered by importing or by you deviating from the route. It takes some extra advance planning, but is very much worth it when you are out on the road.

At that point, you may as well leave recalc on "auto" because it will always do its best to bring you back to your intended route.
