Turn Off Auto Recalculate on Routes Created Outside the GPS!

After having done so much work building routes in Basecamp or Mapsource, why can't those routes be used without recalculation on our gps units?

I'm speaking specifically about the Montana here - many people are waiting for Garmin to fix this automatic "Route Recalculation" issue before giving up their antique X76 units.

Many people simply won't buy a unit which does not take routes as downloaded and just navigate them, assuming of course that the same maps reside and are enabled on the gps.

Actually, this brings up an idea - maybe the route you download from Basecamp could have settings included which 'enable' the required map, assuming it's on the gps.

Garmin just released a Montana beta today that appears to address the recalculation issue (along with some other major fixes)

Fixed issue with preserving routes imported from Basecamp (identical maps required)

It has taken awhile, but the Montana team has really tried hard to respond to user feedback.

This update is awesome - a big thanks to the Garmin Montana team!

Also pleased to see the ambiguity surrounding Routing/Avoidances has finally been clarified, though no mention was made in the version details.

I just tested it... It works! I just created a route, copied it to the Montana and loaded it up. There was no prompt to recalculate. :D :D :D

You will even be able to send mixed-routes (Direct & Along-road) to the Montana without recalculation.

Now if BaseCamp would do just a little to support mixed-routes that would be great.

For example: Changing Activity mode on a Routes Properties window automatically recalculates the route. Don't automatically recalculate the route - there's a button for that at the bottom of the Properties window. Then while along-road routing I can easily switch to Direct routing and take my planned path onto non-routable tracks on the map and then return at some point later to a routable road - and switch my Activity back to an "along-road" mode. No recalculating unless I specifically ask for it by pushing the Recalculation button.

    Cheers,

    Grande!!!
    un ringraziamento anche dall'italia!!!!!!!
Ancora poco ed il montana è perfetto!!!
  • Can I get a report on the Montana firmware update. Can you upload a shaped route and have confidence the Montana will follow the BaseCamp route that was uploaded? How would the Montana do as an replace for a Nuvi? Does the montana have lane assistance? Any hope of a Nuvi you can upload routes and have the same route on the Nuvi? Currently the Nuvi does fine as long as you just have a destination and are happy with shortest or fastest automative route. Mixing routes, inserting waypoints, and even shaping does fair but you have to verify the route on the Nuvi to be sure and that takes forever. When Nuvi users can start dragging a route to their Nuvi and get the same route, I predict BaseCamp use will double by the Automative group.

    Thanks

Yes, with the right maps (City Navigator NA) the Montana does have Lane Assist.

And a friend of mine tried creating a route in Basecamp and was able to load it to the Montana and navigate it without the Montana recalculating it.

I rarely use the computer to create routes, so I can't confirm how well this new feature works. I also don't install beta updates. ;)

However I can confirm that the Montana shows lane assist in City Navigator when you use the Nuvi dashboard. It also shows speed limits. It does not support junction view or the use of a traffic receiver however.

I stopped using my Nuvi 3790 when I got my Montana 600, which I use both in the car and on foot now.
  • Thanks for the update. I don't use the life time traffic on my Nuvi but I use junction views. Maybe garmin will update the Nuvi line to allow uploaded routes that don't change.
