Great forum - unsure where to ask this

It seems for now I can do whatever I please in BaseCamp and other than the need to have Windows to convert the maps I am quite pleased with the new solution. Thanks for everyone's help.

I am not sure where to ask this question so here goes.

I use my GPSMap60CS primarily for snowmobile touring in Quebec (and some ATVing). I have installed a routeable mapset of the QC snowmobile trails which works great in BaseCamp for planning. My issue is what settings do I need on my GPSr to make BaseCamp planned and loaded ROUTES follow the "TRAILS" of the mapset on the GPSr screen. What I get are straight lines connecting the points I clicked to create the routes which makes it less easy to follow the route while riding.

Any help would be much appreciated!

You need the same maps installed on your GPS as you are using in BaseCamp to create the routes.
  • I am not that familiar with your 60CS and every model is different. Getting the BaseCamp route into your GPS and getting the exact same route drawn on your GPS is a challenge. Many of Garmin's GPSs will not accept an uploaded route from BaseCamp and most of Garmin's GPSs must recalculate the route using the GPS firmware and loaded maps. BaseCamp uses the same routing algorithm to calculate the route that is use by the GPS but as the routing algorithm get changed with new models some GPSs get left behind.

    Bottom Line:
    1. Same maps used by BaseCamp and GPS
    2. Same preferences used to calculate route on GPS that BaseCamp used.
    3. The more waypoints you add to the route, the better the match.

For example my Nuvi 1490 LMT does a good job of reproducing the routes from BaseCamp if BC is set to automative activity and I match routing preferences to the GPS preferences. Problem is most (probably all) of Garmin's GPS have a subset of preferences and activities compared to BC. Most users (if your are reading this post, you are not most users) just upload waypoints and don't try to match routes because it is too much hassle.

I think BaseCamp developers have done about every thing they can do and most Garmin's GPSs on the on the market can't handle a firmware update to fix the main problem. It might help a little if you could tell BaseCamp your GPS model and BC just show the activities and preferences available for the GPS. If Garmin's want's to compete with the tablets and smart phones, BC is a key asset. All they have to do is make a GPS (all GPSs they make) accept a route from BC that draws the exact same route on the GPS.

Jack, I am pretty sure your problem is not as simple as directing routing being set on the GPS. Your problem may not have a solution. Routing trails is a great feature of BC and if you have topo maps, you can create elevation profiles. However, your GPS may not be able to follow trail when the route is recalculated by the GPS.

    Thanks for the replies.
I do have the same maps installed on both BC and my GPSMap60CS. BC also makes it easy (to me) to upload Collection items to my 60CS.

While I am hopeful there is a solution to this question, even without it, for the past 6 years I have found the GPSr to be an indispensable tool for getting me where I am going.

It seems one one "trick" may be to convert a created ROUTE to a TRACK. The main negative of that is using some of my finite Track Log availability.

    Open to other suggestions.
  • Converting to a track will work and some of Garmins GPS will give directions following a track.

Unfortunately this did not exactly work. The Tracks created by BaseCamp from the routes have too many points. The become truncated when loaded to the GPS. Still searching for the solution.

In the preferences section of BaseCamp there's a "Transfer" tab. Here you can instruct BaseCamp to filter your routes to track conversions down to a user specified number of track points.
