Waypoint and data management between BaseCamp and Edge 800

Hello All,

I'm having issues using my new Edge 800 and Basecamp. I've tried to search for my issue on this forum but had no luck so I'm posting my issue.

I'm running Mac OS 10.7.2 and BaseCamp 3.2.2.

I have BaseCamp installed and running. I've downloaded the Birdseye topo maps. I'm able to see my Edge 800 and download my few routes I've tracked since I've started using the Edge.

My problem started when I began creating Waypoints. According to the software description, "BaseCamp... allows you to transfer Garmin Custom Maps, BirdsEye Imagery, waypoints, tracks, and routes between your Mac and Garmin device. It allows you to manage your data on practically all Garmin map products...". I've not been able to manage or delete data from my Edge 800.

Here are some specific pain points for me:

1) I can't rename a waypoint on Basecamp or it is a duplicate when I send it to my device.

2) I can't remove any data from my Edge through BaseCamp. I select something on my Edge, tell it to delete and it's gone. I then eject the Edge, start it up an the supposed deleted item (waypoints, tracks, etc.) are still present.

3) The symbols I assign on my Edge don't match what is presented in BaseCamp.

Any direction or advise would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
James

Anyone else have this issue? Surely, I'm not the only one.

Any support folk from Garmin check these forums?

There are, I believe, other threads discussing the issues you mention.

The mismatch between the symbols are a problem across almost all the devices, i.e., they use different names for symbols, etc. That is a problem that will eventually be solved when the device teams settle on a particular symbol set among themselves or provide a consistent way for the BaseCamp team to determine exactly what device symbols are available.

The rename/change/delete waypoint on device problem is one that is closer to a solution. It, too, has been discussed on here previously.

Unfortunately that is true on many devices, like the Edge 800.

That is actually true on many Garmin devices but not all. The newest Outdoor devices support deleting data from the device, but fitness devices and PNDs (Nuvi/Zumo) don't yet.
    3) The symbols I assign on my Edge don't match what is presented in BaseCamp.

The Edge 800 has a bug that causes it to not correctly use the symbols for waypoints that it receives. It has been noted by that team and hopefully will get fixed in a future firmware release.
  • I'm having pricely the same trouble - it also takes a few goes to transfer data from Basecamp into the Edge 800. Very frustrating.

    Have you found any workarounds?

It's a real shame that Garmin release stuff that doesn't actually work properly. If customers are suposed to be beta testers too they shouldn't have to pay full whack for the device!

I'm close to sendning the thing back for a refund.
  • Even the 810... [sigh]

Actually, these issues seem to largely still be present with the new Edge 810 even. Extra frustrating for me, since I have a much older Garmin GPSMap 62st, and it seemed to work flawlessly in these areas (deleting/renaming items on the device, transferring, ...). Also that the 810's SD card is locked, makes it pointless even having an SD slot (you can't copy all the data onto a faster/bigger card and expect it to work, security getting in the way of functionality).
I wish there was some real competition to Garmin so they'd actually have to strive for perfection :-)

This track was current a year ago, for me it still is. I posted last spring this message, referring to more or less the same issue in the tread: i haven't seen a solution. No other than considering a Mio...or maybe a good solution in this tread?

    Henk Wrote April 2013:
I have several tracks and routes in a Basecamp folder. Clicking the right mouse button offers the option to transfer the content (routes and tracks) to the device.
After the process the device renders just 1 route of 2 and non of the tracks.
No matter how many track & routes I transfer in the folder /Garmin/Newfiles just 1 file appears. After disconnecting and starting the device just one track/route will be rendered.
I tried one by one: nothing better
I exported the tracks & routes to GPX files and transferred those to /Garmin/newfiles: nothing better

The process with my edge 600 I use since 2007 is not great either but more straight forward and works at the end.

How come that in 2013 Garmin software performs like software from the 90s?

Horrific experience and a wast of time
