Basecamp vs. Zumo maps

Both Basecamp and Zumo are up to date. Created route in BC, downloaded it to the Zumo, disconnected Zumo, when I tried using the route, received msg stating that the maps would have to be recalculated!

Is this normal or did I do something wrong?

Mike
  • I don't have a Zumo but the Nuvis and Dakotas have to recalculate the route before the device can use the route. If you can set the preferences the same on both BaseCamp and Zumo, you should get the same route most of the time. I think it works better when you insert waypoints as opposed to dragging shaping points. I don't think BaseCamp can fix this problem and a firmware update probable won't work either. It will probable require a new gps and I don't think Garmin makes one. I think your Zumo will use a track for directions, if so that is another option. I think the Montana have most of BaseCamp route preferences and modes and makes route transfer work better.

Personally I think BaseCamp is Garmin's best and only defense against smart phones and tables. Currently it appears form the forum that only Bikers use BaseCamp. I think geocachers use it but it just works as it should and you don't see many posts. It used to be too hard for the Nuvi group to get maps onto their computer but that problem has been solved with a free download. The only problem that remains is when they drag the route to the GPS the route changes most of the time. I know garmin is working hard to make the Nuvi a standalone device but that is what the smartphone and tablets are and neither are as good as a computer for planning and storing geodata. All Garmin has do is make a gps redraw the same route transferred from BaseCamp.

Thanks PSEABOLT. I will go back and check to make sure both have the same settings. I did not use Waypoints, simply allowed BC to route between two points, made one change in the route and loaded it to the Zumo,

I don't route often, and the last time I did it only gave me point to point, with out following the street turns. Someone said that my maps weren't the same, so I made sure both were current.

    Appreciate your help.

If you have a zumo 660/665 they will accept Routes without recalculating them IF your map versions are the same between computer and zumo and you do the transfer in the right way - which is: Select your Route and use the Transfer command (not drag/drop) to send your route to the zumo internal storage, not your SD card. The zumo should then place the Route in the Custom Routes list without having to Import it.

If you have a zumo 550 or 220 - no help.

    Dan,

I have a 660, and I used the Transfer to Device button to download the route to my GPS. So, I believe I did everything correctly, and as I said, both map sets had just been updated, but it still Recalculated.

    Thanks for your response.

  • Mike,

Zumos, in addition to insisting on identical map versions, are also very fussy about shaping points. When you say you changed one thing, how did you do that? If you dragged the route, it can confuse the zumo. Instead, add a "real" waypoint to effect the same route change and try again.

Dan, I did drag to reroute. I didn't use any waypoints in creating the route, just gave BC the starting and ending locations. Then I made the one change. Maybe I'll try it again, without changing anything and see if it still recalculates.

    Thanks.

Dan, I tried it. First created a short route with just starting and ending points, sent it to the Zumo, and everything worked fine, no recalculating. Next I did it again, but this time I changed the route by dragging it to a new location, and when I tried it was told the maps were different and asked me if I wanted to recalculate.

So, I can't drag to change routes, and have to use "real" waypoints to alter routes. So please tell me what a "real" waypoint is?

  • A real waypoint is created by clicking on the map with the waypoint tool. You can double click the route and drag the waypoint to the correct position in the route list. The first time it will always go between the start and end of the route. There are other ways to accomplish waypoint creation and insertion into the route.

Shaping points created by dragging the route do not appear is the Lists under MyCollection as a general rule. I think it would be a helpful feature if you could right click a shaping point and create a real waypoint given the fact that simple dragging a route to a GPS doesn't give you the same route in many cases and many of Garmin GPS do not allow you to transfer a route form BaseCamp or MapSource. When the Nuvi 32xx were introduced they would not allow you to transfer routes. Garmin promised to fix the issue but I don't know if Garmin has delivered.
  • Judging by the conversation over in the Windows forum for BC, this clumsiness may soon be a thing of the past. The new 3.3 beta supports use of shaping points in zumos.

If this actually works, I propose we throw a party [g].
