BaseCamp for iPad?

Is this a possibility? I realize it can't be done with existing versions, but one can only hope...

Too bad Apple doesn't let the standard USB connector which comes in the camera connection kit work with gps devices. That would certainly be an impediment.
  • The iPad doesn't have a filling system. It is up to each app to manage its data. Many Android phones are eliminating the filling system. I bet apple would be willing to help but Garmin management will have to be convinced it will sell enough GPSs to pay development cost.
  • One of my favorite topics. . .;)

As you point out, data management is up to the app and the BC architecture is a DB design. That helps. There are already iOS compatible Maps (those used by StreetPilot for iPhone). But, there are other issues that would need to be resolved besides having BC-iOS. There would need to be a hardware interface between the iPad and Garmin GPS's to transfer data since Garmin's GPS's don't support WiFi.

Speaking of wireless, Garmin could do something similar to the newly announced Ant+ Adapter for iPhone. But, Apple would have to allow for "data-write" API's to this device and I'm not sure that's in Apples best interest. Because Garmin's USB hardware/firmware expect to see external power and the iPad cannot provide sufficient current, I'm not sure Garmin could come up with a hardware connection.

I agree that Garmin and Apple could work out some hardware/firmware solution and it does really come down to generating enough revenue to warrant such an undertaking.

I'm keeping my fingers crossed but not holding my breath. :(
  • Ya, I guess we will have to keep carrying the MacBook Air for now.
