Which activity profile is best for off-highway use? I don't see any menu that allows the user to create a new profile. I am guessing the best alternative is to modify another existing profile like Bicycling, Motorcycling, or Walking, right? You would want to avoid highways and freeways, as well as foot trails. If you do modify an existing profile will those mods carry over to the Montana? Any recommendations from more experienced users? Thanks.
You're confusing "Activities" with "Profiles". BaseCamp does not have "Profiles". And, no you cannot create your own "Activities" in BaseCamp. They are pre-defined Routing variables.
The Montana allows you to assign the desired Routing "Activity" to one or more Profiles.
Yes, it would nice to be able to really Edit/Create your own Activities in BaseCamp and on the Montana but not yet.
You might try using the "Motorcycle" Activity and then set your Avoids to try and direct your Routing to "Unpaved Roads" while avoiding Highways, Interstates, Carpool Lanes, etc.
Here is a screenshot of my Motorcycle Activity settings:
The problem is, for true Off-road or OHV riding, one may not want either "Fastest Time" or "Shortest Distance" Calculation Method. Cheers,
Slightly OT, but I have found it useful for navigating in the boonies (not off-road in my case, but very rural) to leave U-Turns unchecked as an avoidance.
Why? It alerts you quickly that you have deviated from your planned route but does not then calculate an often undesirable or nonsensical route to avoid calling for a U-turn.
A quick glance at the screen when it calls for a U-turn will often reveal the correct route -- much harder to achieve if the screen is busy redrawing its idea of how to reverse course without doing a U.
