ACA Route Creation

I've got my cue sheets & I've imported the ACA GPS data however I'm having a lot of trouble creating my daily routes in BaseCamp.

The ACA instructions talk about MapSource but not BaseCamp. Does anyone have experience doing this?

ACA only provides you the Waypoints. You mentioned that you "imported" the data. Did you mean you imported the ACA GPX file into BaseCamp?

If so, what you have is a bunch of waypoints in a list. You must use the ACA Maps and navigation notes to create a Route in BaseCamp (or any computer app).

    From the ACA website:

    What Are the GPS Files?
The waypoint files are keyed to the maps of the routes in the Adventure Cycling Bicycle Route Network. We have made waypoints for each turn in the narratives and each facility in the service directories. Every waypoint has a comment that describes a town, an intersection, a service, or another point of interest.

All the waypoints of one section -- one paper map -- are in a single file and each route is contained in one folder. Adventure Cycling is in transition to distribute the entire route network in a single format, GPX. GPX is a public XML text format that virtually all GPS data programs can read. (Due to the update schedule, when the files are downloaded, multiple file types may download in addition to GPX. You may ignore these files and use the GPX one.)

    Some software possibilities include:

    Garmin Corporation's MapSourceTm and BaseCampTm

    Cheers,
  • What issue are you experiencing exactly? Note that you will need a detailed map to create useful routes. The basemap included with BaseCamp will not work very well. If you don't have this on your computer, BaseCamp will use the map on your device when it's plugged in.

The easiest method of creating a route is to select Create Route from the toolbar, select all the waypoint you intend to do in a day from the bottom left hand pane and drag them into the Route dialog. Note that select order is respected, so you can pick them in the order you plan to visit or you can reorder them once they are in the route dialog.
  • almost completely confused...

OK, I hope someone can help me. I too have the ACA GPS file for the map 7 (Florida east coast) of their Atlantic Coast route ( https://www.adventurecycling.org/routes/gps2.cfm ). In the section 7 GPX file are all the waypoints AND some items that BaseCamp obviously sees as ROUTES (have the little green route icon).

When I am in base camp if I select only one of the ROUTE icons I see that route/section selected in the map so obviously BaseCamp DOES see the "routes" that are listed in the GPX file from the ACA...but I cannot seem to "use" them in any meaningful way on the Edge 800!! arrgghhh...

I have exported the entire GPX file to the Edge 800 and I can see all the waypoints and GO to any ONE of them, but I cannot for the life of me find/use/select/??? the routes that plainly show in BaseCamp. Do I need save these routes separately from the waypoints? store/place them someplace different in the edge?? what? how?

I understand that the unit cannot handle a "route" that is 300 miles long with hundreds of waypoints so I thought I'd just be able to use these smaller sections/routes of the longer , whole length but I assumed (obviously incorrectly ) that I would be able to find, someplace in the Edge, these routes that are embedded in the ACA's GPX file. Obviously I'm dummer than the Edge 800.. I do so hate being outsmarted by inanimate objects...

So PLEASE tell me what I am doing wrong and/or tell me what to do so I can follow these routes form the ACA files.

Garmin Edge 800, City navigator NA, BaseCamp, Map Source, EasyGPS

    THANKS MUCH!!!
