Route->Track conversion weirdness

When I use Route->Track conversion 2 strange things happen:

1) My Edge 800 seems to think the track only contains the begin and end points and navigates directly from the first to the last (so one straight line).

2) (Less annoying but possibly related) You can't 'play' the track in Basecamp. Pressing play does nothing but very briefly blink the big red arrow head at the start location. Playing routes, or tracks downloaded from my Edge 800, does work.

Is this a bug or am I misunderstanding how it should work?

I use Basecamp 3.2.2 and Edge 800 v2.20.

Thx, Halt

    I don't own and Edge but in an effort to help. . .

    • When you do a Route to Track Conversion, the Track will have a large number of track points in it. How many Track Points were in the Track you sent to the Edge 800? I don't know how many points an Edge Course can have in it but you can filter the Track in BaseCamp to the proper number of points that the Edge 800 can manage before sending it to the Edge: Preferences->Transfer->Set max number of points.....
    • "Play Track" has never worked in BC v3.2.2 - at least not on my Mac.

    Cheers,
  • Thanks for your response. I've not counted the number of points but I've tested it also with a track around the block of 500m so it couldn't be a limit problem.

    Today I've had a chance to try it with the Windows version of Basecamp at the office and it did work so that confirms it is most likely just a bug in the Mac version.

    It is a bit strange that this was not caught in testing because it is a simple test and the bug renders the whole 'convert to track' feature useless. Maybe it only doesn't work i.c.w. the Edge 800.

    I'd guess this is happening because tracks created from routes generally only have a timestamp in the first track point.

    That would make playing the track in BaseCamp be instantaneous/uneventful. It could be that the Edge 800 only reads in timestamped track points, which would also explain the behavior you see on your device. We could put in fake timestamps by fudging the numbers and/or making a rough guess based on your selected activity. We'll investigate these possibilities.

    That said, I believe just sending a route to your Edge 800 does work in BaseCamp 3.2.2 so long as your Edge 800's firmware is up to date. You can confirm that your device is up to date by running WebUpdater or right clicking on it, going to "Get Info", and clicking the "Check for newer device software..." button.
