Usability Request

I have a large number of Map Products installed in BaseCamp. When I select the Map Product "drop-down" to change maps, the list is centered on the current map product. This almost always requires me to scroll up or down the list to open the window fully. It would be much nicer for me if I could see all of the map product when the window opens and not have to make the extra action of scrolling to open the window fully.

Thanks for considering my request.

Cheers,
  • The affect you are experiencing is the behavior for pop-up controls. I looked into what it would take to change it and the alternatives were less desirable. For now, I might suggest using the Maps menu, which will give you the entire list...as long as that fits on the screen.

Thanks for the reply azdrmn. I'm not that up to speed on OS X controls - just seems a bit odd. . .

While the selected map popup is still a supported toolbar item, it's not actually in the toolbar by default any more. The "Maps" menu is probably your goto for this.

It is handy to have on the Toolbar, especially when you have more than one map product for a geographic area. To bad the control's behavior is not consistent. Sometimes it functions as I would expect - showing all of my map products. Sometimes it only shows a portion of the map products until I scroll and select one - then the window expands and seems to stay that way for a while (haven't figured out why just yet).

It's because of how the popup menu automatically scrolls to and selects the current map: sometimes this means that enough maps will be listed above the current map in the list that they won't fit in the space between the popup button and the top of the screen, resulting in scrolling.

Shuffling the order to keep the selected thing at the top of the list could help this, but that would be pretty non-standard and maps would no longer be alphabetically sorted. Depending on how many maps you have, though, we may already be stretching what's expected of this kind of control.

    PAXTER1,

Thanks for the additional dialog. You just "turned on the light" for me as to why I'm seeing what I am.

The OS X Control behavior is for the popup list to go up from the button to the limits of the "primary" screen. I'm running two displays and I run BC in my second (27") display. The popup control now is not forced "Up" but rather "drops down" as I am use to in other OS's. Can't the popup be "told" to drop down from the button?

In the shot below, BC is "maximized":

In this shot BC is not "maximized":

I had even started deleting map products form my install (kept them in BC-Windows) just to see what was going on. Now I can reinstall them :D

    Cheers,
