Route Waypoints not transferred to Oregon 550t

I created a route in Basecamp 3.2.2 with the TOPO24K West map set by creating a series of waypoints, then using the "Create Route..." dialog to put the waypoints in the expected order. Actually, several routes, which I used on a multi-day hiking trip over Labor Day.

I then transferred the routes, waypoints, and custom maps to my Oregon 550t (running firmware 4.50).

While in the field, the waypoints never appeared on the route in the Oregon: it was just "Trail", "Trail", "Trail" and "Trail" - no mention of the waypoints making up the route. At first I thought that it just wasn't printing the waypoints but...

Eventually, my planned route diverged from what I was actually doing, so I created a new route on the handheld the same way (waypoint 1, waypoint 2, etc.) and now the unit properly showed directions as I navigated the route: "NW to <waypoint1>", "N to waypoint 2," etc.

So did I do something wrong, or is there an issue with how Basecamp sends routes/waypoints to the GPS device?

Ironically many users want less route waypoints to show up, but your experience surprises me. Can you send an example .gpx file of the data that is exhibiting this behavior? Thanks.
  • Sorry for the late reply; I have been busy at work and haven't been using the GPS much recently. Attached is a screenshot of the route description as seen in BaseCamp as well as an exported GPX file, and a screenshot of the route as seen from "Route Planner > Edit Route" on the Oregon. You can see the waypoints in BaseCamp but just "Trail" on the Oregon.
[FYI, the route is in Yosemite NP, and was generated using the Topo 24K West DVD.]

From looking at the file, it seems like this might either be an Oregon problem or at least a bad interaction between BaseCamp and the Oregon: Looking at the GPX file, the waypoint names and indicators are there, but the Oregon (software 4.50, GPS firmware 5.00) labels everything as "Trail", which coincidentally is the comment/description for those waypoints -- is it possible that it's just displaying comments/descriptions of the route waypoints?

I looked over your GPX file and the data for the waypoints is good. Meaning, the waypoints all have the correct NAME, SYMBOL and COMMENT that you created in BaseCamp.

What you are seeing on the Oregon map is the waypoint COMMENT (as you noted, all of the waypoints have the COMMENT of "Trail"). Your GPX file is telling the Oregon to display the NAME of the waypoints used in the Route (Route Point).

Have you checked the settings of the Waypoints on the Oregon? When you look at a Waypoint's properties, what do you see in the NAME field?

    azdrmn and STEVERODRIGUES,

I just loaded the route in question on to my Montana and the Route does the same as it does on Steve's Oregon - it only shows "Trail" for the name of the Route Points (imbedded waypoints).

Far out. . .! Got to look at that XML again:confused:

    Cheers,
  • When looking the route waypoints (Route Planner > Edit Route > 'Trail' > Review) - I still have the actual waypoints loaded in the Oregon - I see that the waypoint's NAME (big title at the top) is "Trail", NOT any of the waypoint names in the GPX file. It also is lacking the associated comment.

This would kind of argue for some difference in the handling of the GPX between BaseCamp and the GPS unit.

Yes, I see the same thing on the Montana - which leads me to believe that when the Route was created some how BaseCamp screwed up the imbedding of the waypoints in the routing data (which you can't see in GPX XML).

I edited the imbedded waypoint XML just to change the Comment to be the NAME, but this caused the Montana to crash when I selected the Route in the Route Planner. This route is obviously doing something wrong in the routing data.

I don't think you did anything wrong but it's going to take the BC team to analyze the routing data to see what BC did.

    Cheers,
