BC to GPSMAP620 data xFer Issue

Hello,

I'm not able to successfully perform data transfer:

-from within Basecamp with the specific function
-or by drag'n'drop a GPX file into the unit's internal memory

Scenario:

1. the GPX file is created by BC (or - when I drag it manually - it is correctly copied into internal memory: I verified it's presence before ejecting/unplugging the unit)

2. after ejecting and unplugging the unit:
no data is present under "user data", "favorites" etc. im my GPSMAP

3. reconnecting unit to Mac: previously created or copied GPX files are no longer present into the internal memory.

I discovered that

-if I abruplty unplug the unit (without properly ejecting the mass storage device) after data xfer, GPX files are preserved into the internal memory and I'm able (sometimes but not always) to find my data in the unit's database .

-If I eject the unit's mass storage device after data transfer, GPX files will be deleted.

So... Where do I wrong?

Thank you very much indeed for any suggestion.

Andrew

  • have you tried a master reset on the GPS?

I'm somewhat familiar with the GPSMAP 620/640 chartplotters.

I'll assume you are saving Automotive Mode data (GPX) files(?) and that you are Booting the 620 in Automotive Mode to see the data? Do you have the same outcome if you just transfer the GPX files to the SD Card?

I don't think BaseCamp knows about ADM (Marine Mode) data files. Have you tried HomePort for that?

    Cheers,

Yep, I performed a master reset. It didn't solve.

    @DRTBYK
Sorry I didn't specify I'm working in automotive mode.
Thank you for the hint: I discovered that GPX files placed into the SD card (in the GPX folder) are transferred and readed by the unit without issues.
However there is no way to transfer automotive data (GPX) from BC to the SD. BC transfers data as ADM files if a SD CARD is selected as destination.
(the capability to transfer ADM files was lately added to BC)

I discovered that I can't delete data in the unit by removing the GPX files. I have to proceed form the unit software.
I don't know if it is the right unit's behaviour: I own an Oregon and a Montana that behaves differently.

I confirm that the only way to successfully transfer data to the internal memory implies the abrupt disconnection of the unit without properly ejecting the mass storage volume.

Thank you very much indeed for the support obtained from both of you.

    Andrew,

Your GPSMAP 620 is working as designed. The unit, when connected to BC or Mapsource, "tells" them to send ADM file type to internal storage. This is the only file type that the unit will read directly (from what I could gather when I did my initial evaluation of the unit in 2009). This is mainly do to the dual-boot approach of the Operating System.

You still should be able to transfer GPX files to the SD Card and not have to unplug the unit in order for it to not delete the files when ejected properly.

Have you tried putting your SD card in a reader attached to your MAC and have BC transfer the GPX data to the SD Card. Then install the SD Card into the 620. It should see the data and ask what you want to do with it.

    Good luck.

P.S, ...at least you have the Montana. The best GPS Garmin has ever made.
