Basecamp and Route Optimisation

I would love to suggest a feature request for Basecamp for the Mac. I would love their to be an option to optimise a route. I know you can do this on the device but I have over 20 stops to make and my 1450 takes ages to sort out for me.
I optimise my drops by moving around each waypoint but would love for Basecamp to help out with this.

Also would love to see a version for the iPad even if we had to pay for it and use our downloaded map with our unlock code.

Cheers and keep up the awesome work.
  • Not sure what you mean by route optimization. If you are talking about the order you travel 20 waypoints, Have you tried creating your route form the 20 waypoints, dragging the waypoint in the list to change which waypoint is traveled to first, second. etc.? You can check the milage at the bottom of the screen?

Thanks for the feedback. This has been on our wishlist for awhile. We'll see if we can get it scheduled into an upcoming release.

    azdrmn,

Wow - really? Your going to give us BaseCamp on the iPad? :o ;)

Need a early-early beta tester? I'm your man!

    Reality check

I feel and email coming on. . .

    Dear Mr. Pemble,

Garmin has adopted support for the iOS platform's, at least in part, with the Streetpilot and [new] Garmin "maps" app's.

With the almost ubiquity of the iPad, it would seem natural that BaseCamp be ported to that platform. The marriage of Garmin's leading GPS's with the portability and user acceptance of the iPad would make for a "must have" duo in my opinion.

I have been a strong supporter of Garmin devices in the past and continue today with my latest purchase of the Montana 650. What a great device and passing of the "Chartplotter" baton for those of us that participate in multiple outdoor activities (including of course Motorcycle Adventure and Dual Sport riding).

As a retired Engineer and customer that engages in beta-testing and early adopter activities, I would like to commend the Garmin Montana and the BaseCamp Engineering Team's for their great customer interaction. The significant level of "Customer Involvement" offered by these team's only serves to make for better products and customer satisfaction.

Please consider providing the Executive support and funding for porting BaseCamp to the Apple iPad.

    Best Regards,
  • I would like to see BaseCamp for iPad too. If I could buy a MacBook Air with a 3G card built in and the same data plan I have on the iPad I probable would quit carrying a MacBook Pro and iPad on all trips. I think the trend is going to be towards iPads replacing many portable computers. I also know Garmin must see a return to commit to a project. I suspect Apple's efforts to make the iPad as secure as the Mac (much easier on Mac because of market share) to be a problem uploading waypoints, routes, and tracks to Garmin's products. Heck, it's a problem upload routes on a mac or pc. As someone else noted I would be glad to pay for a BC iPad app especially if I could use it for navigation, even if I couldn't upload to my gps. For me the iPad would never replace any of my GPS, it is too big for geocaching or bicycling. On the road, the passenger wants the ipad for surfing, email, etc. I have plenty of turn buy turn app for the iPad but all my GeoData is in BaseCamp. Syncing with my home computer would be very important to me and if I could bluetooth over waypoints to the gps it would be even better.

I personally hope that Garmin never again confuses Navigation applications with Trip Planning applications. I want BC to stay a Planning application. And having it on the iPad would be a great mobile planning tool.

We won't see Bluetooth to GPS since Apple does not support Bluetooth Serial Data exchange. But, we could see a situation where Garmin works with Apple on allowing Garmin (only) GPS's to connect to the iPad using the SD or USB Camera Kit. BaseCamp (for example) would look for the Garmin UID and only receive/transfer Garmin GPS appropriate data (Map's, GPX, POI, JPG, and Photo's). Some other GPS mfg's use FTP protocol's between the iPad and GPS but the GPS still has to be attached to a network. Of course, it would be easy to make iPad BC an iTunes data exchange capable app - but that would require a computer. A truly mobile physical connection approach between the iPad and the GPS would be a winner and could be architected to comply with Apples data exchange restrictions and Garmin's newer GPS units.

    Cheers,

I agree I want planning also but I only need iPad on a trip. If the iPad knows where it is located, its a major help for planning. I don't think navigation would be hard to add and Garmin may need to sell the app to pay development cost. Down the road, an iPad app might sell GPS's but I don't see an iPad app selling enough GPS

I think you are correct on the data transfer especially about a new GPS. USB be is probably the best approach but if you working with Apple and building new GPS's why not go for a wireless approach and send the route to the GPS from the back seat.

I'm not big on paying for this type of application. I buy maps to use with it and hardware to use with it. Seems like I'd be paying for the privilege of using my purchased products to their fullest. It's the "solution" not just the components, that provides the highest value and produces the highest market share. Apple is showing that to be case and to a lesser extent, Garmin is as well.

So far, Apple has refused to support any type of Serial Data transfer. It was just a suggested approach and I'm sure Garmin and Apple could work something out - others have.

I have reassessed my position on not paying for BaseCamp on iOS (iPad).

If I could connect a Garmin GPS to the iPad and transfer all BC data types (to/from) and BC would read all of my onboard-GPS Maps, I would pay as much as $30 for iBC.

    Cheers,
