I'm about to update the maps on my nüvi 1490T - and I would like to update the maps used in connection with BaseCamp simultaneously.
How is that done - should I remove the existing BC maps first??
Don't remove maps from gps and I would wait to remove old map from your Mac. There is a couple of ways to update, here is how I update. Go to MyGarmin and sign in or create an account if you don't have an account. Just follow the prompts to update the map on your 1490, the only confusing part is one of the dialog windows has an advance button you have to select before you can see the check box to request the map be downloaded to your computer.

Well, the question was not about updating the gps - I did that a couple of days ago with another unit, and I (think I) know how it works, NOW! :)
The question was whether I should simultaneously update the maps used with BaseCamp? But maybe new BaseCamp versions 'intrinsically' include updated maps??
BaseCamp uses whatever maps are installed on the computer or on connected devices. The only map that is included is a very low detail "base map" that is intended to get users started, but not sufficient for detailed work.
If you are a BaseCamp user and are using Garmin Map Update or the new Lifetime Map Updater and can spare the space (around 2GB), I would encourage you to use the advanced option or preferences to specify you want the maps installed on your computer. Note that neither updater removes the old maps, so you will need to do this manually. You can use the Maps->Show Installed Maps option in BaseCamp to show where the old maps are located in Finder and delete them to free up space.

I suppose only #1 should be replaced(?) And I believe the safest strategy would be to leave #1 where it is, until I have verified that a newer map has been stored(?)
