Need Help with import routes

I upgraded (maybe I should say downgraded) my Nuvi 750 to a Nuvi 1490 about the time 3.2.x beta was released. The first time I tried to upload a route (dragging) from BC, the 1490 would either freeze or hang 100% of the time when I went to import route from My Data folder on the GPS. Garmin tech support told me to use RoadTrip. I deleted the current and temp files in the GPX folder on the GPS and emptied the trash and tried different routes and found some would upload. I recreated the routes causing problems and they uploaded. The next time I tried to upload routes (today) almost every route either turns the garmin off or hangs even the routes that uploaded last time. If I create a simple two point route and drag it to the gps, it uploads but all of my saved routes I try will not upload and some only have a start end and one via.

I think I have a problem with the nuvi 1490 but how do I get tech support to help solve the problem. Could this be a BaseCamp issue, any suggestions? Thanks
  • I have found dragging to be less than reliable. Have you tried Transfer to device (or Send List To Device) with just Routes checked?

Also, with one of the simple routes that is misbehaving, export it to GPX and open it with a text editor and see if you spot any obvious stuff such as XML tags that open but don't close, a truncated route, or garbage in the file.

Some Garmin units are very sensitive to routes that are created on map version X and loaded into a unit with Y. My zumo does very badly when it encounters via/shaping points created in CN NA NT 2011.x while it is running 2012.10, for example.

Finally, the 1490 has been very finicky with such things as Custom POIs, speed camera lists, and various map data errors combining with some firmware glitches to cause shutdowns and freezes. Be sure you have the latest.

  • Good suggestions, I will give them a try when I have a little time. I let you know if something works.

    Thanks
  • Well, GPX export is no help. No difference with Transfer or Send List To Device. The issue is with Way points inserted into the route. I had a route with one waypoint in addition to start and end that crashed the GPS. I removed the waypoint and the GPS loaded the route. I put another waypoint in the route and got it to upload. You would think maybe it has something to do with the one waypoint and I sure it does but something is keeping just about every route from uploading and the most waypoints any route has added is 9.

The GPS is worthless if you are trying to use it with BaseCamp.
  • An update on the nuvi 1490. I think I have an intermittent problem with the 1490. I uploaded 4 routes from BC and tried to upload each route one at a time for use with the 1490. All 4 crashed the gps. I created another using the same start and end points. The new route uploaded and I was able to upload the other 4 routes. The same routes that crashed the gps before. The routes that were crashing before were not reloaded from base camp.

I created another route on BC using the same waypoints and uploaded to the gps and the gps crashed when I tried to import the route. Restarted the gps, imported a different route and then imported the route that had crashed before. The gps was not connected to the computer. Does anyone see how baseCamp could be causing the problem.
  • update, Garmin sent me a RMA for the Nuvi 1490.

upgraded from 1490 to 2555 and like to transfer waypoints/
The problem is that I am unable to ransfer my waypoints, I was told that basecamp would do it.
I conneted my old 1490 and this is the screen I see,
Looks like no waypoints on my Nuvi.
I tried another program, and is mentioned "error in Garmin/GPX/Current.gpx"
Yet my Garmin works OK with all waypoints correct.

  • Copy the file current.gpx in the GPX folder of your 1490 to your PC. Rename it temp.gpx and copy it to the GPX folder in your 2555.

Boot your 2555 and the favorites you've sent should now be there, since on boot your nuvi merges temp.gpx into any existing favorites. Once that's done reconnect your nuvi to your PC and use Windows Explorer to delete temp.gpx.
