BaseCamp 3.2.1 startup crashes?

We've gotten a decent number of reviews in the app store saying we're crashing at startup, and while we do have some crash reports, none of them really stand out as a startup crash. We also didn't have anything we recognized as startup crashes reported in the beta.

If any of you get a startup crash with BaseCamp, please post or PM that crash log to me so I can try and nail down that crash for you :). The crash log text is generally accessible via a button in Apple's crash report dialog.

Please do report it also, I'd just like to be able to figure out which cases we already have relate to this startup crash.

    An additional note:
Please tell us if this happens again after you delete your plist. We're not sure which version of BaseCamp is guilty of writing out this bad plist. If it's 3.2.1 then this error can occur again after you delete that plist and we'll have to look further into what's going wrong.

Thanks, Paxter1! Deleting the preferences file fixed my issue, and I'm having a lot of fun with BaseCamp 3.2.1.

Maybe this is a clue to the root cause of the issue. BaseCamp was initially installed on my Mac via the Topo Map Western Region software I purchased on DVD. It installed an old version from the disc, launched it, and prompted me to download the latest version. Once the latest version installed and launched, it would crash each time I launched it. It never launched properly once.

I really wanted BaseCamp to work, because I just purchased a Montana 600 and this is my first GPS device for hiking. In order to use BaseCamp, I found the old PPC version online (2.0.1) and installed it. I used that over the weekend just fine, deleted the preferences file today, installed 3.2.1, and everything seems to be working.

I'm guessing offending version of BaseCamp that created the corrupt preferences file is 2.0.1 or the version that the Topo disc installed (not sure which version that is).

By the way, 3.2.1 has a lot of nice improvements over 2.0.1, but both are good programs. Thanks!
  • For the first two occasions I started up the latest Basecamp I had crash notofications - then so far all subsequent startups have been without incident.

Same behavior on my Mac. 10.6.8 MacOS X Systemlanguage: German.
    Now BaseCamp 3.2.1 runs flawless.

P.S. Make sure there is no old version of BaseCamp in the "temp" Folder in "Garmin" otherwise BaseCamp wants to update after the update with an old version.
  • Basecamp crash

I know this may be a little off topic, but basecamp crashed today, not on startup but whilst trying to convert a track to a route! I have saved the log and submitted the report. I have attached a pdf of the log

Mine's crashing with any version 3 basecamp, both before and after Lion install.

I have removed the plist file, it didn't help.

BTW, the library folder in the new Lion OSX is hidden so you need to so this to find it:

In the Finder, choose Go > Go To Folder.
In the Go To Folder dialog, type ~/Library
    Click Go.

Basecamp does start up in v2, but looks funky and sometimes crashes. This didn't happen before I upgraded, then downgraded.

What files specifically should I remove to see if the problem is in my data from the app support/basecamp folder?

Here's one of the crash logs.

    THELIGHTGUY:

It seems this crash is due to a map product. If you could remove maps from your Library/Garmin/Maps folder one at a time (just drag them into another folder so you don't lose them) and pay attention to which one you have to remove to make BaseCamp launch successfully, I'd be curious to know which map we're having problems with.

I'm having the same issues, but can't find this file anywhere. Sorry about my lack of computer suave, but any tips on how to find this?
  • If you are not running Lion OS 10.7, got to your home directory and follow the path below to the maps folder.
    ~ or Home Directory/Library/Application Support/Garmin/Maps
If you updated to Lion, Apple has made the Library a hidden folder but if you hold the option key and select Go from the finder menu the Library Folder will be available for selection.

I removed the City Navigator North America NT 2010.10 map from the app support/Garmin/maps folder and it still crashed.

Here's the log, and thank you for the much more efficiant way to get to the hidden Library. :D

Today I installed 3.2.1 via in-app notification. I used it briefly and it seemed to work fine.

I then installed TOPO US 24K North Central. When that was done, I started BaseCamp and it looked like it had overwritten BaseCamp with some very old (2.0?) version. I reinstalled 3.2.1, but it always crashed on start. (I kept one of the logs if you want it.)

I deleted the prefs file you mentioned, and it appears to be running now, although it seems like it's taking way longer to update the map after a move or zoom than it used to. I've viewed all the maps I have installed and they all appear to display ok. What I've got installed:
City Navigator North America NT 2011.4
    City Navigator North America v8
    Global Map
    TOPO U.S. 2008
    Topo U.S. 24K North Central
    Topo U.S. 24K Southwest
    Topo U.S. 24K West
US Topo 24K National Parks, West v3
