BaseCamp and Edge800 file exchange troubles

Changes made from version 3.1.4 to 3.2.1:
Added support for reading data from .Fit devices like the Edge 500 and 800 and the Forerunner 310XT.

Connecting an Edge 800 (v2.20 firmware) to an Apple with BaseCamp 3.2.1 gives me trouble

What does work:
- reading the locations/waypoints
- reading the activities
- Dragging a route to the Edge (GPX format it seems)
- Exporting a track in TCX format

What does not work:
- Reading/Import of Courses from Edge
- Sending a route in GPX format (using export)
- Sending a route in TCX format (using export)
- Sending a track in GPX format (using export)

All sending files are placed in the EDGE:\Garmin\NewFiles\ directory and after disconnection and startup the Edge 800 should convert them to Courses.

The only way i can manualy export an Route to the Edge is by exporting to a file on my computer, Import it in Traning Center, covert the history to a Course and send it to the Edge.

I have not tried all combinations, but the dragging i tried as last and now a route does appear in the Edge. Is there maybe a problem with routes which have names including the space caracter? In Training Center the space is forbidden to use in a Course name.

For testing i created a route on a routable map (Openfietsmap.nl), and used the BaseCamp function route to track to get an track.
The Edge is one of the bundels and had City Navigator EU active, but as far as i can see, during conversion of NewFiles to the fit file structure no maps are needed or used.

I have also done some testing with BaseCamp for Windows (to be sure that its not an Edge only problem) and i have not much problems with BaseCamp for Windows to drag and/or export routes and tracks to the Edge. Almost every time the Edge does a correct conversion to Courses.

This one also does not work:

    What does not work:
    - Reading/Import of Courses from Edge

I should expect to see the courses as tracks in BaseCamp.

How to in Dutch to read Courses from the Edge and get them in BaseCamp, for MAc, only by using GPSies.com
  • I'm having trouble exporting to my new 800, basecamp crashes, sometime several times in a row. i have managed to export 3 routes and these are found when 800 switched on. some routes are crashing basecamp every time.

    using basecamp 3.2.1
  • Could you send the routes that are causing BaseCamp to crash. We have not been able to reproduce any route sending errors with the 800, though clearly our users have. Thanks for the assistance in advance.

Ok, I am one step further.

My problem is assumption that it all should work :) And i have no problems with BaseCamp crashing on routes or tracks or imported activity's.

What i should do with the Edge is click on a route or several routes and tracks, then use Right mouse button and say export to Device.

What happens is that every route and track is places in the edge:\garmin\NewFiles\ folder as:
    - Route.gpx
    - Route1.gpx
    - Route2.gpx
    - etc etc
    - Track.gpx
    - Track1.gpx
    - Track2.gpx
    - etc etc.

BaseCamp is exporting all routes and tracks to the Edge and creates a file for every single tracks and route.

What happens with the dragging or using the File menu - Export is that I create my own GPS file with multiple routes and/or tracks in one GPX file. And this is something the Edge 800 does not handle correct. So I am used to send information to Garmin GPS devices by dragging or Exporting. This i should not do with an Edge 800

To get a route or track properly into the Edge 800, just right click on the Track/Route and do Send to Device -> Routes and then OK.

For the developers I don't know if you can adjust the File Menu Export command.
But mayby you could add an extra tip / warning about sending information to the Edge. And change the dragging behavior to the Edge to create also the separate files for each object.
  • Sorry for the delay in replying, email sent to support this morning detailing issues.

Basecamp would mostly crash when transferring after the second or third file. Didn't matter what the route was. would sometimes crash on first route. would sometimes crash several times on startup sequentially.

Exporting same routes to HD and then manually copying them to the 800 is fine, 800 reads these routes fine.

Have gone back to 3.1.4 and no problems.

Seems the issue was with the new version.

    Same Problem

I just wanted to chime in and say I am experiencing the same problems. I have tried everything listed in previous posts with no luck uploading anything to my 800. I also reset my 800 to factory defaults and tried again with no luck. This did not happen in the previous version, and the problems started after the 3.2.1 update.

    Thanks
    Brian
  • There is an issue sending routes to the Edge 800, which we have identified and fixed. This will be in the upcoming maintenance release.

For now the only workaround is not to use waypoints from the device. Create all waypoints for the route inside BaseCamp and it should not crash. Sorry for the inconvenience.

I've just purchased the 800 for it's supposedly better memory handling etc and hopefully more stable routing features. When I create a few routes in Basecamp and just copy them over to the "AllData" area in the connected device (Garmin 800), they get put in the New Files folder of the device. Then when I disconnect the device and turn it on and go to Courses, they don't all show up. Specifically, I copied 7 routes from Basecamp to the device. Checked to see that all the files were in the NewFiles folder of the device. They were. It seems random as to which ones will actually get turned into courses, but never do all of them get created. And the Newfiles folder is empty after this. Very frustrating as this very task is really the reason I purchased the 800 in the first place. The previous post stated they've identified an issue and it is fixed (that was posted 8/1/2011). I'm not sure if it's the same issue or not but it would be nice to know when the "upcoming maintenance release" mentioned will be made available. I should also mention that I am using Version 2.2 of the Garmin 800 software.
