FEATURE REQUEST: Avoidances

Right now I'm in the middle of a couple of migrations -- first from Windows to Mac, and then from Mapsource to BaseCamp -- and noticed that BaseCamp does not appear to support avoidances (specific roads or areas which will not be used in routes).

For example, I'm traveling on an Interstate where one interchange with a US highway is currently closed, with the US highway itself being closed in that area. I would like to be able to say either

1) don't use this stretch of US highway, or

2) don't pass through the areas parallel to the Interstate (where the ramps would pass were they open).

Mapsource does this, and it's pretty handy when planning a number of routes in the area since I don't have to remember move routes away from a closed highway.

Thanks!

Don

    +1 (Again)

A few of us have been pushing for this in other threads Don. Every voice helps. :) It's one of a few MapSource features I hope will eventually make it into BaseCamp.

If it helps any, I'd sure like to see this feature as well. Helps avoid getting routed on roads that are known to be closed.

    Add another

Add me to the list that would love to see this. I have given my reasons in another forum.
  • I would like to see avoidance, but if my GPS can't use the feature when I upload the route, I'm not sure it would be of much benefit. If BC had avoidance, it would be extremely useful for the many closed roads, especially on national forest property. Some of the roads have been close for 20 years and I don't think the Garmin maps or anybody maps will ever be updated. I'm probable missing something here but if I have to add 20 shaping points to get the route in my gps, what good is it? Can you upload an avoidance waypoint to the montana and have it use the avoidance? If Garmin does not make a gps that can receive routes from BC calculated with avoidance, should we not be requesting this feature form Garmin as opposed to the developers?

This is the issue I have with this feature in BaseCamp, as I've stated in a different post. No device since the Streetpilot 27xx supported the same form of avoidances. So putting them into BaseCamp doesn't really help when the route is sent to the device and makes the difference between BaseCamp and the device routes even bigger.

I would strongly recommend that people chime in on the Garmin Ideas location to request the device support this feature.

One of the reasons many Garmin users are hanging on to these legacy devices is their ability to use avoidances. I've been offered more than I paid for my GPSmap 478, and 276C units are going (quickly) on eBay for near retail.

Granted, the process of entering avoidances is crude and time consuming, but still functional. It's also the main reason I'm still using MapSource as my primary planning tool. It would be great to have the avoidances transfer with the route but I'd be happy just having the ability to tell BaseCamp to avoid certain sections of I 90, or the core of any city I never want to ever see again. :)

Don't worry, my opinions have been communicated to Garmin via various means. ;)
