Geotagged Photo linked to Waypoint

I used BaseCamp to geotag several older photo's associating them with Waypoint's. I transferred these Waypoints to my zumo 660 using the Send To Device option: Waypoints and Geotagged Photo's

On the zumo 660, when I go to Favorites, the Waypoint is there and shows a blank photo box in front of the Waypoint. Reconnecting the zumo to my Mac reveals that there are no photo's in the \Garmin\JPG folder.

Did I miss a step somewhere in BaseCamp?

Cheers,
  • Currently BaseCamp does not copy data linked to a waypoint to the GPS when the waypoint is copied. This is something that we have had on our to do list for a while, but our analytics are showing a dearth of users using photo waypoints, so it isn't getting as much attention.

    azdrmn,

    Thanks for the feed back.

I've written a few thousand use cases in my professional carrier and I have a theory regarding "pre-release" analytics - you probably knew this was coming ;)

    [THEORY]
If a user cannot easily preform a use case (meaning the tools only do half the job), the user won't use the function defined by the use case.
    [/THEORY]

In this discussion, the use case is Photo Navigation. But there are no easy ways to enable PhotoNav between the user, GPS and Computer (BaseCamp). The user is left to figure out "how" to do Photo Navigation and since it is not easy - the user says, "...I don't use Photo Navigation.", when asked.

I believe that user's "discover" benefits associated with new features by using/playing with the feature. If there is no feature, there is no discovery.

I understand that you guys can't do everything on your list so if this one is going to fall by the wayside, I would suggest removing the text in the Transfer window so as to not confuse BaseCamp user's.

P.S. I still would like to see this feature as it would make my life easier. :D

By the way, my web analytics (OK, informal reading/searching) indicate that the only way to currently manage Photo Navigation is via Garmin Connect (an online service) and something like PicasaWeb (an online service). There are a growing number of people these days that are not happy being tied to the Internet - even in the world of "cloud" computing - due to security issues.

BaseCamp, by supporting this feature, would remove the need for Internet connection in order to effectively use Photo Navigation.

With almost 50 Garmin GPS's (and more coming) that have camera's and support Photo Navigation, BaseCamp could "lead" the way in promoting the use of the [Photo Nav] feature - which might even drive more use of the Garmin Connect service.

    :D

OK, I'm done stoking the fires of Photo Nav - for now;)
  • Stoke away, I like the feature. I agree with your assertion that the easier a feature is the more people will use it, in a kind of "build it and they will come" way. However, we do make it very easy to create photo waypoints: reading from the device, track matching against any set of photos on your Mac, importing jpegs directly, and now in 3.2, dragging a photo onto a map to have it geotagged wherever you drop it.

In the spirit of full disclosure, there are technical issues that make doing what you are asking for to nuvis and Zumos an issue. I've been talking to those groups about fixing the issue.

However, BaseCamp will happily send photos to the Oregon 550 and Montana. So the precedent has been set.

    azdrmn,

Thank you for the feedback. Yes, BC has some great features for Photo Nav. I especially like the "pin-to-track" feature on Oregon and [soon] Montana when you take a photo "on-board". My Montana is on order.:D

My personal experience is that it takes a lot of "motivation" to get the zumo team interested in many of the "non-Highway" features that Garmin has in house. It took two years to get the Import Tracks-to-Routes feature (which broke with the v4.2 update:(). But, that "Tracks-to-Routes" feature [when it's working] is really very creative. You guys might want to take a look at it for your approach to Create Route from Track.

Anyway, thanks again. Really looking forward to v3.2.x.

    Thanks BC team. . .

    This Photo geo-tagging works slick.

Just drag and drop the photo on the map and it's done. Most of what I'll be doing will be pinning photo's to Tracks but this stuff is cool. And it just works - even cooler!

Hmmm, I see what BC is doing with Photo's and map location now. BC is not really geo-tagging the photo with the lat/lon info in the EXIF data. Rather, BC is creating a [link href] to the photo file on my Mac. With that in mind. . . I have the following observation:

If it is the intent to actually geotag the photo and send it to the GPS rather than just "link" to it while in BC that would be very cool!!! If not, there doesn't seem to be much value in sending the link reference in the waypoint since the GPS can't do much about it other than show a "missing photo" icon the first time you view the waypoint.

On the other hand, dragging and dropping a truly geotagged photo to BC places the photo where the tagging in the photo's EXIF indicates (as the BC Help file describes) ;). When I transfer that photo to the Montana, it does go to the correct location. :D

    Photo-waypoints, cont.,

Previous discussion in context, please enable the following in BaseCamp.

    Use Case:
Create a Waypoint in BaseCamp using a Photo and add attributes to the waypoint - like Proximity - and then transfer it to the Montana [GPS] internal storage, I only get a Photo in the Photo Viewer. I would expect to get:
    • Waypoint with photo attached in Waypoint Manager
    • Photo in Photo Viewer
    • Proximity Alarm in the Proximity Alarms app

Create Photo-waypoints and use them in a Route then transfer that Route to the Montana, I get no photos attached to the waypoints and no Photos in the Photo Viewer. I would expect to get:
    • Waypoints with Photo's attached
    • Proximity Alarms
    • Photo's in the Photo Viewer

The lack of support for prominent features on the Montana is become quite frustrating. I will be making the same request of the Montana team. It's a shame that you both have spent Garmin $$$ developing these features and yet not enable them.

    Cheers,
