kmz Waypoint files

If I find a waypoint in Google earth and save the file as a kmz file, BC tells me it is not a garmin custom map file. I have been converting the waypoint from a kmz file to a gpx file using one of many 3rd party conversion apps. Am I missing a direct import or is there an easier way?

Thanks
  • It looks to me as if BC can import kml/kmz files but I have not tried it. If it doesn't work, then your way is the way to do it.
  • I get the "not a custom map" error too. Don't see a way to import kml directly. GPSBabel is your friend.

To my knowledge, as it pertains to BaseCamp and certain Garmin GPS's, KMZ file type's can only contain Garmin Custom Maps which is a JPG image that has been geolocated (calibrated) within Google Earth.

I think it would be even more interesting if Google Earth would "Save As" to a GPX. Then you could just save the Waypoints to your GPS directly. Don't know why Google has avoided this since they do open GPX files.

    Cheers,
  • Currently there is no direct way to save waypoints in KMZ files. BaseCamp only supports KML Ground Overlays, AKA "Garmin Custom Maps". While KML waypoint, track, and route reading is on our to do list, some enterprising user could add it now by creating a "Converter Plugin" that converts KML to GPX.
  • After checking the tutorial for writing XSLT stylesheet, I decided GPSBabel is not that much trouble.
  • I've written a few in my past life and I don't think the "third-party" Converter Plug-in idea is such a good idea for customers.

Besides, the type of conversion we are talking about is related to either Garmin products (TC, BC, etc.) or Garmin "relationship" applications like Google Earth. Garmin already has these XSLT's available or should - why are you continuing to suggest that customers rewrite them?
