DropBox and BaseCamp

I use DropBox to sync the MBP and two iMacs. It has been the perfect solution for me but it is not idiot proof. I know I was warned by PAXTER1 but on two occasions it tried to open my DropBox BaseCamp Data with a previous version. BaseCamp warned me but both times I did not cancel so BaseCamp erased my data and started a new empty file. DropBox is very fast and before you can quite dropbox you have all computers synced to an empty data file.

Several ways to correct the problem after you get the BaseCamp updated on all synced computers.

1. DropBox keeps all file changes for 30 days but you can't restore the baseCamp data folder, you have to restore each file. I think the only files you need to restore is:
AllData.gdb
FolderData.gfi

2. DropBox is smart enough to make a backup copy in your DropBox folder. Just Delete the empty
AllData.gdb
FolderData.gfi
and replace with the backup file by removing the ( and everything between)
AllData (MBPro-7's conflicted copy 2011-06-03).gdb
FolderData (MBPro-7's conflicted copy 2011-06-03).gfi

3. Replace BaseCamp folder using TimeMachine.

If Garmin implements iCloud syncing in their apps then this should become a non-issue. All you'll need is a free iCloud account and Garmin's apps should sync between all your Macs seamlessly without you losing any data.
  • I bet if I do something really dumb, I could screw up iCloud. When talking about iCloud, Jobs said, "iCloud just works .... Why should I believe them (Apple) they are the ones that brought you MobileMe ... it wasn't our finest hour.

MobileMe has had it's "teething problems," that's for sure, and Jobs was referring to the launch, but it has been flawless for a very long time now. At least for me. Syncing data between both my desktop, laptop and iPhone has been great and problem free.

The thing about trying to do this with Dropbox is that it is a kludge! Mainly because it isn't integrated into the apps by Garmin, despite the fact that Dropbox also provides an API. My hope is that now that Apple is providing the API and the service is free that they will take advantage of it and we will all benefit.
  • Either me or .Mac duplicated the address book a couple of times in the beginning but the MobileMe launch was not a problem for me.Given the API announcement; if Garmin doesn't have a fear of BaseCamp for Mac getting ahead of BaseCamp for Windows, I bet we will see iCloud BC app syncing and full screen mode.
