Issues in importing Basecamp routes to Zumo 660

I'm going on a motorcycle trip to the French Alps and have preplanned a lot of routes using Basecamp (Mac). I've uploaded them to the device, via basecamp, when I go to the Import data command I can see all the routes but it's not allowing me to import most of them.

It either gets to about 86% and then hangs, or it starts importing and the screen just switches off. I've imported about three of the routes OK. I've tried importing them all at once and doing them individually, neither has been fully successful.

When I do get one to import then it always seems to hang at 98% for a very long time, before finally loading.

I'm also getting an error message saying that the device tells me it can only store 20 routes. Is this correct?

I have an additional memory card installed but I'm not sure if I can just export the gpx files out of Basecamp and copy the .gpx files into a folder and then I can load them as I need them whilst I'm on the trip, whilst deleting others to keep it to the 20 limit?

I am leaving early next week and would like to resolve this issue as soon as possible.
  • This has been a big problem for me as well. I've talked with tech support and even given them a sample route to reproduce the issue, but they have been unwilling to do anything on their end to track down the problem and fix it. Generally their response is to re-create the route (real helpful).

From what I've figured out the hard way, the problem seems to lie with the routing data in the route. Typically, when I have a new route that crashes the unit (I'd say 50% of the routes I create do this, way to go Garmin), I go through and move all of the way/viapoints slightly away from their previous position and try again. Eventually the route will load. It seems like points at intersections are the most likely to fail.

I wish there was a better solution to this. You can get the routes to load by removing the route data first, and let the unit recalculate, but this doesn't work 100% of the time and often (for me) doesn't result in the same routing as BaseCamp chooses.

I've also experienced several crashes when navigating to the start of a route at the beginning of a ride. It would be great if Garmin would do something about these issues, at least provide some sort of debugging feedback so I don't have to make blind guesses at how to make my routes work.
  • Thanks for the pointer about intersections, that may be an issue with some of the routes I'd plotted.

This was a helpful article I read about how to get routes to match, which may be useful to you.

  • Thanks for the link. I mostly agree with all of the points made, but I prefer placing navigation points on intersections so they are treated as via-points and do not factor into the calculation of time and distance to next turn.
  • What zumo software version do you have installed? If you're using v4.2, I would suggest reverting to v4.1.

Have you tried Transferring your Route's to the zumo\Garmin storage instead of the SDCard storage? Do you have the same maps on your zumo as you do in BaseCamp?

Vast majority of these issues have been with the zumo66x software over the life of the zumo line and not with BaseCamp or Mapsource.

    Cheers,
  • I'm not sure how I change back to 4.1?

    It's currently running 4.2

I seem to be doing a bit better, the tip of not having waypoints right at junctions has helped with the importing.

I've transferred to the Garmin successfully, it's the importing of the data that is more of a challenge.

Maps are the same on both I think. I recently updated the Garmin to Europe 2012.1 but I can also see 2011.1 in the basecamp menu.

My memory card seems to have a life of it's own, sometimes it shows up and sometimes it isn't showing. As all my music is on here it's pretty annoying. I've tried three different cards. If I remove the battery and pull it out and put it back then it sees to come back again.

One final Basecamp question - How do I once and for all delete routes from Basecamp and the Zumo?

I will delete routes on basecamp and manually on the Garmin (or through Basecamp) but when I send or receive most of them come back again. Do I need to use the "delete from my collection" option?

I also find that the Zumo has 4 or 5 of the same route loaded onto it. Can I delete the archive files from the GPX folder on the Garmin drive to get rid of these?

To rollback your software version click here which will take you to a site where you can download the GUPDATE.GCD file version you want: in this case v4.1.

You simply copy the GUPDATE.GCD file to the zumo\Garmin\ folder and replace the one there. When you unplug the zumo and replace the battery cover the zumo will reboot and load the GUDATE.GCD file.

You can "Move to Trash" the 2011.1 map if you want - I usually do after a sufficient testing of the new maps. It's located in the user\Library\Application Support\Garmin\Maps folder.

You might try a different microSD Card and/or try re-formating the card (backup your MP3's first :) )

The Archive files are the Tracks of where you've been. You can delete these if you don't want a record of where you've been. Otherwise just transfer them to BaseCamp using the Transfer process and make sure you select "Tracks".

On the zumo, Tools->My Data->Delete Route(s). Select any/all of the Routes you want to delete. Then...

Plug your zumo into your Mac and using Finder, once the zumo mounts, open the zumo\Garmin\GPX folder and delete (Move to Trash) the files there. This will delete ALL of your Routes on the zumo so make sure this is what you want to do.

You will do the same for the SDCard: user\SDcard\Garmin\GPX\ delete the files there.

BaseCamp and the zumo do not "sync" with each other. You transfer to and from the zumo what you want. Your BaseCamp "My Collection" is a database made up of "Lists" which are pointers to your data (routes, tracks, waypoints) in the My Collection database. If you copy a route from one list to another list you have only created a pointer not a copy. If you want to delete ALL of the routes call x_route in My Collection, select My Collection and find the route x_route, delete it and it will be deleted in ALL of the List's it was in.

You can see how this works by creating a test route and place it in several Lists (by drap/drop or copy/paste). Now change the route in one of the List's. Notice now that the route changed in the other List you copied to.

If you want to copy a data type (route/track/waypoint) to a List and change just that copy, then use the Duplicate command. This will make a duplicate copy of the date in My Collection so you can change one without affecting the other copy.

    Cheers,
  • I had the same problem importing routes on 4.1, the update to 4.2 didn't make any difference in this regard.
  • Importing route problems

I have had lots of problems importing routes but seem to have found a solution.
My problem was that if I tried to import a number of routes the Zumo 660 would hang after the 1st route and I would have to switch off. The route in fact was imported ok but would not move on to the next route.
The solution on my GPS was to remove and replace the battery. As soon as I had done this then it would import any number of routes automatically ( up to the max of 20 )
