Join tracks feature regressions?

In the old RoadTrip, when you select a set of tracks to join, as you click on each track in the join list, it highlights the track in the map window so you can tell which one is which when reordering the tracks. Unless I'm missing something, in BaseCamp it doesn't appear to highlight the selected track any differently from the rest of the tracks.

Also, when joining it used to show a dotted line between the ends to be joined, so I can tell what's going to happen before I commit. I don't see such a dotted line in BaseCamp.

In practice I have done lots of track joining and there have been only 2 ways I ever wanted to join tracks:

- in order of time (obviously only works if timestamped)
- by closest ends

It would save considerable trouble if I could just choose one of the above options and have it do that automatically. Granted, there are cases where the result might be ambiguous (e.g., 3 tracks ending at the same point) so the option to manually order them is still needed.

I too do a lot of Track joining and often in areas with many tracks. I like your idea of TimeStamp ordering.

As it pertains to track highlighting, I'd like to see it work something like, when a groups of tracks are selected and the Joint Track option is chosen, the selected Tracks should be "shown on the map" and the highlighting should be kept. Then within the Join Track window list, when a track is selected it's highlighted in a different way from the others on the map (not using color since there could be a conflict).

In the old RoadTrip, the selected track would highlight with an outline, similar to the way a selected track normally highlights in the map window when it's selected. It appears in BaseCamp all tracks to be joined are identically highlighted all the time, so there's no way to tell which one you've clicked on.

Yes, exactly. I give. Let's keep it simple. Once the Tracks to be joined are in the Join Tracks window deselect them. Then when selected in the JT window, highlight that track since in the case of the screenshot below, you can't tell which track is Track1 (and I want to Reverse it) in the Join Tracks window.

  • Ugh!!

I have to reiterate, the method of joining tracks has taken a terrible turn for the worse, to the point I'm going back to RoadTrip to get this done. This is due to 2 serious, new, deficiencies:

    1. In the join tracks dialog, of what good is it to be able to move tracks up and down in the list when you can't see which track you are moving on the map? In RoadTrip, the selected track was plainly highlighted in the map.

    2. Of what good is it to be able to reverse a track when you can't see what track you are reversing, except by noticing (maybe) which sets of arrows are flipping? In RoadTrip, there were dotted lines connecting the ends of the track segments to be joined, and it was plain as day without having to look at little arrows.

To do the same in BaseCamp that I used to do in RoadTrip, I have to determine, ahead of opening the dialog, which order the tracks are to be joined in and which ones need reversing. I have to write all this down on a separate sheet of paper before opening the dialog, because once the dialog is open my actions have almost no visible feedback on the map and I can only cross my fingers I'm doing the right thing.
