move map while using route tool?

Is there a way to move the map while using the route tool, i.e. while placing new via points? I can zoom that map using the scroll wheel, but I would like to be able to move the map as well.
This is Basecamp 3.1.4 (NOT the new beta, which for me exhibits the freeze-on-launch-bug).

There are a few answers, but probably the easiest is to hold down Option and then the scroll ball will scroll the map as opposed to zooming.

There's a problem with this method as I reported months ago. As soon as you hit the option key, the route is terminated at the last point, on a touchpad anyway. I'm still hoping for an option to turn the default Mac scroll/pinch zoom back on.

I use the 4 arrows keys. I have much better scroll control with the arrows than the scroll.
